Overview
Join to apply for the Toxicology Chemist II Crime Lab role at Dallas County. Applies scientific principles and uses instrumentation to determine the presence and quantity of more than 400 drugs, metabolites, poisons, and other toxic substances in biological fluids and other forensic specimen. Ensures the integrity of evidence and compiles final reports for use by medical examiners and law enforcement agencies.
Responsibilities
Perform and evaluate approximately 25 complex, quantitative analytical procedures. Review instrument function and analytical results for accuracy; perform additional tests as indicated. Develop and maintain active quality control/quality assurance programs; assist in new procedure development and validation. Prepare laboratory reagents and standards; maintain supplies and equipment; calibrate, troubleshoot and repair instrumentation. Evaluate analytical assays and specific assay results for initial reporting. Manage and prioritize a large volume of analyses in common bench space. Provide on‑call emergency holiday and weekend analytical services as needed by the Medical Examiner’s Office. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field.
Experience:
Two (2) years of analytical laboratory experience. Special Requirements:
Ability to operate and maintain specialized laboratory instrumentation; knowledge of mathematics and chemistry; good oral and written communication; ability to work well with others; must pass an extensive background investigation; must have a valid Texas Driver’s License and good driving record.
Physical/Environmental Requirements
Work in areas with potential exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards. Follow good laboratory practices and safety precautions including the use of PPE. Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to accurately execute standard protocols; some moderate lifting is required.
