What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the Quality Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level. The role supports Design/Build Project Managers, Subcontractors and LANL's Building Officials in the execution of nuclear and non-nuclear capital projects across LANL's three organizations: Science, Technology and Engineering; Weapons; and Operations. The Infrastructure and Capital Projects Directorate plans and executes infrastructure and capital projects with a focus on plutonium pit production facilities for U.S. nuclear weapons. The team delivers high-quality, cost-effective projects safely, on time and within budget. The role requires partnering with subject matter experts to provide assurance functions such as event reporting, risk management, and audits while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Quality Engineer 3 Salary range:
$104,100 - $172,200
The selected candidate will assist in the effective implementation of the Laboratory’s quality assurance program relating to the construction of non-nuclear, nuclear, and radiological facilities. Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Review and prepare procurement documentation germane to quality assurance and quality engineering requirements
Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of processes, procedures, and applications contributing to an effective Quality Management System for engineering, procurement, and construction
Participate in nonconformance reporting, closures, and corrective action processes
Lead, coordinate, and/or conduct audits and surveillance of quality-affecting activities
Quality Engineer 4 Salary range:
$125,200 - $211,300
In addition to the lower level responsibilities, this role provides expert services to projects and maintenance operations. Typical responsibilities include:
Review and prepare procurement documentation germane to quality assurance, quality engineering, and quality control requirements
Participate in development, implementation, and evaluation of processes, procedures, and applications sustaining an effective Quality Management System
Serve as the primary Point of Contact for nonconformance reporting and corrective actions
Potentially lead, coordinate, and/or conduct audits and surveillances
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:
Advanced knowledge of applicable commercial construction codes and standards
Technical knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction practices sufficient to understand QA requirements, including CGD and graded approach in an NQA-1 environment
Ability to interpret physical, mechanical, electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, specifications, and schematics
Experience communicating with multiple levels of personnel to solve complex problems
Ability to plan, prioritize, and schedule work to meet requirements, deadlines, and budget
Additional Job Requirements for Quality Engineer 4 Qualification at the higher level requires:
Expert knowledge of commercial construction codes and standards (e.g., ISO 9001)
Experience developing and sustaining a Quality Management Plan; mentoring junior team members
Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and consensus-building skills
Extensive experience conducting and reporting audits, assessments, surveillances, and observations
Extensive experience reviewing technical documents and drawings for completeness and compliance
Expert-level experience presenting critical findings from assessments
Advanced knowledge of quality assurance and control programs and building/infrastructure trades
Data- and risk-based decision-making experience
Advanced knowledge of quality documents (e.g., DOE Orders, ASME NQA-1, OSHA, LANL Quality Plans)
Advanced MS Office skills and experience with NCR tools and other software
Education/Experience
Lower level: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, QE, Industrial Systems Engineering or related field and 8 years of related experience, or equivalent
Higher level: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, QE, Industrial Systems Engineering or related field and 12 years of related experience; advanced degree preferred
Desired Qualifications
ISO-9001 or NQA-1 Lead Auditor certification
Procurement Technical Subject Matter Expert certification
Experience in classified matter protection and controlled computing
QA Engineer certifications from recognized bodies
Advanced knowledge of nuclear codes and standards
