Job Title Packaging Engineer
Job Description The Experienced Packaging Engineer will be a part of a fully integrated cross‑functional team, working closely with R&D Platforms, Operations, Engineering, Quality, Sourcing, and Marketing. The team is responsible for re‑launching a brand and advancing those priorities. The role focuses on successfully delivering against key development projects, starting up the production line, and improving packaging efficiency. This is a manufacturing environment, driving strong system performance.
Responsibilities
Lead packaging development projects in collaboration with cross‑functional teams including R&D, Operations, Engineering, Quality, Sourcing, and Marketing.
Drive packaging system performance in a manufacturing environment by optimizing machine/material interfaces.
Manage and execute commissioning, start‑up activities, supplier trials, and technical validations.
Partner with suppliers to advance packaging initiatives with a strong focus on results.
Develop and maintain technical documentation including specifications, experimental reports, and financial analyses.
Support new product launches by building strong relationships with internal business units and platform partners.
Identify and lead margin improvement and technical innovation opportunities through cross‑functional collaboration.
Influence internal and external stakeholders by understanding customer needs and building effective networks.
Apply deep technical knowledge of packaging materials to drive innovation and improve operational efficiency.
Ensure packaging systems are compatible with cartoning, case packing, and other equipment used in food manufacturing.
Essential Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering or related field
5+ years of experience in Package Engineering
Strong understanding of packaging design and commercialization processes
Experience in food manufacturing environments
Familiarity with cartoning and case packing equipment
Ability to create technical packaging drawings
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Office 365, SharePoint, and TOPS
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Self‑motivated with effective time management skills
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Knowledge of new production startup processes
Experience with Product Lifecycle Management systems such as Interspec or Optiva
Experience working with engineering firms and vendors
On‑site when necessary and the ability to work remotely when on‑site presence isn’t required.
Work Environment The role is based in a manufacturing environment, requiring collaboration with various departments to ensure efficient packaging processes. The position allows for a mix of on‑site work when necessary and remote work when on‑site presence isn’t required. The use of cartoning, case packing, and other equipment is essential in this food manufacturing context.
Job Type & Location Contract position based out of Kansas City, Missouri.
Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $50.00/hr.
