This position can be hired as either an Engineer III or Senior Engineer depending on experience.

Job Summary The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy’s six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.

Responsibilities

Develop the scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes, including Stress Analysis, Structural Analysis, Dynamic/Seismic Analysis, and Steel and Concrete Design.

Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, determine and present recommendations to resolve issues.

Provide ongoing support for assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.

Develop or revise design/procurement specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.

Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.

Develop licensing screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.

Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.

Basic Qualifications

This position can be hired as either an Engineer III or Senior Engineer depending on experience.

Nuclear Engineer III

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

A Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

4-6 years of engineering experience.

Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.

Sr Nuclear Engineer

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

A Master’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

Proficiency in engineering theories and principles and in project management.

Experience in the utility industry and state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Strong background in Mechanics of Materials and finite element analysis.

Working knowledge of structural analysis software (e.g., ANSYS, GT-Strudl) and dynamic/seismic analysis.

Working knowledge of stress analysis software (e.g., SuperPipe, AutoPipe, Caesar II).

Knowledge of ASME Codes (B31.1, Section III, Section IX, Section XI), AISC, and ACI codes.

Familiarity with SolidWorks or equivalent 3D modeling software.

Experience with nuclear industry standard design processes.

Special Requirements

In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to oversight and written approval by a designated qualified individual until fully qualified.

Able to achieve nuclear site unescorted access/security clearance.

May have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities, including callouts with defined response times and on-call duty rotation; ability to be fit for duty.

The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications.

1 year of nuclear power plant experience

Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program

A Master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree

Working Conditions

Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.

Required to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

Additional hours may be required due to workload or business needs.

Occasional overnight travel.
