Overview
This is a journey-level skilled maintenance position at the Board. An individual performs one or more skilled construction, maintenance and repair tasks of the Sewerage and Water Board's plant equipment and plant facilities areas. Work requires a broad knowledge of construction, equipment and maintenance and repair techniques with individual assignments requiring use of skills in one of the following trades: Electrical, Welding, Machinist, Control Instrument Tech and/or Diesel Mechanics, and related work as required.
Responsibilities Perform skilled construction, maintenance and repair tasks on plant equipment and facilities. Apply knowledge of construction, equipment, maintenance and repair techniques to assigned work orders and projects. Work may involve one or more of the following trades as specified above, as well as related duties necessary to maintain the Sewerage and Water Board’s operations.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
A valid Driver's License.
And Either: Three (3) years of electrical, welding, machinist, control instrument technician or diesel mechanic experience; Or: Two (2) years of electrical, welding, machinist, control instrument technician or diesel mechanic experience with permanent status as a Utilities Maintenance Technician III.
* Prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify education and valid driver’s license claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification.
Additional Information NOTE:
Domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application. Residency requirements are waived for all Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans positions vacant and advertised for at least 90 days. Employees hired under this waiver remain exempt from the city’s residency requirement for the duration of their employment at the Sewerage and Water Board (La R.S. 33:4076). Additional exceptions to the domicile requirement may be made on a case-by-case basis. Applicants are encouraged to apply and discuss domicile exceptions during the interview process.
A qualifying performance test and a rating of training and experience, weighted 100%, are required. All related previous experience will be considered; however, credit for experience will be given for experience gained within the last ten (10) years. Applicants must pass the performance test to be rated on their experience. Specific tests include:
Electrician:
A qualifying performance test with five wiring problems (lighting, motor, resistors, transformer, and motor control starter) and one conduit-bending problem.
Machinist:
A test involving reading a mechanical drawing and machining a part using a manual lathe.
Welder:
A test consisting of electric, acetylene, and heliarc welding of various materials, plus layout, cut, and fit.
Diesel Mechanic:
A qualifying performance test.
This is an original entrance and promotional examination.
