General Purpose
The
Manager, Purchasing (Lab)
is responsible for managing and directing the daily operations of the purchasing and supplies departments. This position leads the teams through all phases of procurement and inventory control, including order processing, budgeting, vendor management, and compliance with purchasing policies. The role also involves negotiating and tracking service contracts, ensuring documentation completeness, and maintaining supply-related support for internal and external customers to achieve financial goals.
This position reports to the
Director, Materials Management .
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Create reports and analyze data to forecast procurement needs and support new laboratory projects.
Maintain procurement files, VRS, and MSDS/SDS records.
Resolve vendor or contractor grievances and claims.
Maintain regular communication with the Director of Materials Management and senior leadership.
Manage vendor relationships and assist in building collaborative partnerships.
Maintain and regulate vendor rating systems and assist in auditing and vetting vendors.
Review and approve online purchase requisitions.
Prepare presentations related to key performance metrics, program updates, and vendor management.
Demonstrate proactive problem-solving and sound decision-making.
Negotiate contracts for materials, services, and equipment based on cost objectives and internal input.
Generate and manage RFQ/RFP packages for supplier bid processes.
Locate vendors, review specifications, evaluate options, and determine product availability to ensure compliance with client needs.
Direct and develop teammates for a dynamic and flexible environment.
Prioritize assignments and manage departmental workflow.
Ensure effective collaboration across multiple functions and with critical external vendors.
Arrange for disposal of surplus materials and equipment per company policies.
Provide leadership to direct reports through coaching, counseling, and performance management.
Identify and develop training opportunities and support teammate growth.
Monitor workflow, delegate responsibilities, and assist with scheduling and timekeeping.
Plan, organize, and supervise teammates to ensure high-quality customer service.
Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations (wage and hour, OSHA, Medicare, etc.).
Maintain familiarity with company programs impacting teammates and foster a positive work environment.
Business Operations & Evaluation
Examine purchasing and inventory levels to maintain healthy supply levels.
Develop reporting that provides insight, identifies opportunities, and delivers actionable solutions.
Evaluate inventory for expiring products and mitigate potential write-offs.
Proactively address business continuity issues or supplier concerns.
Keep senior leadership informed on all active business and operational matters.
Contribute to supplier negotiations, benchmarking, and price analysis.
Education & Experience
Bachelor s degree
in Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related field (required).
Minimum of five (5) years
of experience in purchasing or contracting.
Experience developing and managing departmental budgets.
Strong background in purchasing practices and
MRP functions .
Experience with
Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) .
Proficiency with
Microsoft Office Suite
(Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Ability to develop and document
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) .
Experience with
Microsoft SQL
and
Crystal Reports
(a plus).
