Overview The City of Newport Beach Public Works Department is seeking motivated individuals to serve the community as Maintenance Workers (part-time). This entry-level position provides an opportunity to learn and make a difference in the coastal surroundings of Newport Beach. Maintenance Workers may be assigned to Street Maintenance, Beach Maintenance, Park/Landscape Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance, Fleet/Equipment Maintenance, or another area of assignment. The selected candidates will perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work which may require operating vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other equipment. This position may also assist in other areas of maintenance as needed.

Responsibilities and Work Areas Perform maintenance, construction, and repair work in assigned areas. Operate and use appropriate tools and equipment as required by the assignment.

Selection Components

Application Evaluation:

Applications accepted on a continuous basis with the first review of applications on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, or after 150 applications have been received, whichever comes first. Recruitment remains open until positions are filled.

Online Exam:

Tentatively scheduled for the week of October 15, 2025. Top scoring applicants will be invited to a virtual interview.

Virtual Interview:

Tentatively scheduled for the week of October 23, 2025. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

Schedule

This position will work approximately 20+ hours per week with a flexible schedule including days, nights, and weekends based on the needs of the department.

Retirement The City offers an excellent benefits package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS. The employee is required to contribute 8% of pensionable income or half the total normal cost toward the retirement benefit. Qualifications and Requirements

Experience:

One year of experience performing routine maintenance, construction, and repair work applicable to the area of assignment.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from high school.

License:

A valid California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required due to field duties which may require operation of a personal or City vehicle.

Additional:

A thorough background review, including fingerprinting by the Newport Beach Police Department, will be required. The report will be evaluated with other application information. A criminal conviction will not necessarily disqualify an applicant; factors such as nature, date, circumstances, and relevance to the position will be considered.

Disaster Service Worker:

In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City employees may be required to respond as disaster service workers in the event of a disaster.
