Marin Water's Operation Division is seeking motivated and reliable Assistant Utility-Maintenance Workers to support the maintenance, repair, and construction of water distribution systems and facilities. This hands-on role involves outdoor work as part of a team to ensure safe, reliable water service. Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics
This classification is to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, repair and landscaping of District facilities and distribution systems. It is a trainee or pre-entry level class in the maintenance/utility series, with work performed under close supervision. Positions may be assigned to various operational departments in the Facilities and Watershed Division; progression to Maintenance Worker I or Utility Worker I is based on performance, qualifications, and management approval. Responsibilities
Follow all safety regulations, rules and precautions Drive pickup trucks and dump trucks; operate construction equipment Use a wide variety of hand tools; load/unload and transport materials Maintain equipment and tools; perform site clean-up; perform related duties Assist with maintenance and construction tasks across districts’ facilities and water distribution systems Maintenance of water distribution systems: Excavation, backfilling trenches, installation/repair of mains and services, concrete work, pavement repair, safety setup, and traffic control Maintenance of facilities and buildings: Repairs and maintenance, painting, access roads and tank sites, erosion control, ladders/scaffolding work, general maintenance duties Maintenance of district landscape areas and properties: Watering, pruning, fertilizing, mowing, planting, irrigation system work, and general clean-up Maintenance of natural resources and watershed facilities: Vegetation management, habitat restoration, wildfire-related tasks, mapping watershed features, and data entry Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of use and maintenance of common hand and power tools, construction equipment, and safety practices Ability to follow oral and written instructions; use tools safely; perform simple arithmetic; learn maintenance techniques Ability to work cooperatively, at heights, in confined spaces, and around vehicles and heavy equipment Training and Experience
Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent Some experience in construction, maintenance, landscaping, natural resources or related work Licenses and Certifications
Class A CDL within 12 months (minimum Class C CDL at hire); drive record must be satisfactory May require District CDL upgrades; DOT safety regulations compliance First Aid and CPR within 12 months or as required Possession or obtaining within 12 months of employment of required certifications as assigned Other Requirements
Disaster service worker per California Government Code; may require on-call availability for emergency situations Willingness to work outdoors in all weather, and to work in traffic; ability to wear protective clothing Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Heavy physical work; ability to operate equipment; manual dexterity; ability to lift up to 50-75 pounds regularly and up to 110 pounds occasionally Field work includes uneven terrain, heights, ladders, tanks; exposure to noise, temperature extremes, dust, and chemicals Overtime and weekends as needed Filing Deadline
