About the Job UC Merced Occupational Health Clinic provides treatment for work-related injuries and illnesses; preventive medical services; OSHA and departmentally mandated medical surveillance programs; onboarding of new employees; and supportive efforts designed to improve the general well-being of UCM employees. Occupational Health collaborates closely with Environment, Health & Safety and Human Resources to create an environment where it is equally safe to work as it is to receive healthcare. In addition, Occupational Health partners with those who support employee healthcare in a matter that protects human health. This lead role involves applying occupational nursing principles to protect worker health and ensure a safe workplace. Responsibilities include performing medical exams, treating acute injuries and illnesses per protocols and supporting workplace wellness initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

CLINICAL: Evaluate and treat acute or serious injuries, illnesses or exposures, as per protocols. Use clinical judgment to determine proper care, whether to refer to a hospital, physician, or return to work. Collaborate with the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Health & Wellbeing as needed.

Support worksite health and safety programs by conducting medical surveillance exams (e.g., histories, physicals, blood tests, audiograms, pulmonary function tests).

Identify and assess health problems and hazards through work-site surveys, toxicological research, and analysis of OSHA logs and accident reports. Stay informed about workplace hazards and consult with the EHS team to improve practices and eliminate hazards.

Work with the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Health & Wellbeing, Occupational Health & Wellness Coordinator, and HR staff to coordinate and monitor services for injured workers to ensure effective recovery and return to work.

Protect personal health information as required by law.

Prepare accurate written reports and ensure they are entered into the Occupational Health Record system in a timely manner.

ADMINISTRATIVE/PROGRAMMATIC: Lead or assist in developing, administering, and documenting health programs such as injury prevention, treatment, medical surveillance, health promotion, disease management, and case management.

Participate in reviewing clinical care and program effectiveness, documenting quality improvement studies and outcomes.

Use nursing and program administration knowledge to advise on and improve Occupational Health Services programs.

Explain and address questions about occupational health and wellness programs to employees and managers.

Analyze, document, and present Occupational Health Services program data to various stakeholders.

Serve as a spokesperson for specialized projects or programs.

Coordinate with Human Resources, EH&S, and other specialists and external agencies as appropriate.

Provide essential support during emergencies to protect health, safety, and Lab operations.

Identify and implement improvements in assigned program areas.

Lead: Responsible for training, assigning work, and assisting with the selection and evaluation of lower-level Nurse Practitioners.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution; and/or

Advanced degree (master's degree or higher) in a Nurse Practitioner program accredited by ACEN or CCNE (preferred); and

5 years of clinical experience, minimum 2 years in the occupational health setting (required).

Active, unrestricted, and valid California Registered Nursing License. Required

Active, unrestricted, and valid California Nurse Practitioner License. Required

Active DEA registration to prescribe Schedule II-V medications. Required

Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) or Occupational Health Nurse Specialist Certification (COHNS) Required

Active Basic Life Support (BSL) certification Required

Certification or the ability to gain certification in spirometry, audiometry, and CPR, and other certification as determined. Required

Experience in a university or academic health care setting (preferred)

Skills to analyze needs, establish priorities and provide appropriate medical care and preventive medicine services to the UCM community.

Working knowledge of Workers' Compensation law and processes.

Working knowledge of applicable State and Federal law, including laws and regulations related to privacy and confidentiality.

Interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively and diplomatically with people from diverse backgrounds.

Computer and keyboarding skills to use Electronic Medical Record software; ability to learn and use information systems for Occupational Health and large surveillance and immunization programs.

Familiar with Occupational Health clinic practice management philosophies.

Demonstrate strong clinical judgment, collaborative and administrative capabilities, substantial nursing expertise, and knowledge of professional nursing principles with strong communication skills.

Knowledge of applicable federal, State of California and local regulations, including workers' compensation laws and case management experience.

Proven excellent verbal and written communications, interpersonal, and customer service skills.

Ability to effectively interact with and explain programs to employees and managers.

Proficient with standard computer systems and applications; ability to analyze and present data.

Ability to multitask and prioritize in a dynamic environment.
