Overview
Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner Staff Lead (onsite) at the University of California, Merced. This lead role involves applying occupational nursing principles to protect worker health and ensure a safe workplace. Responsibilities include performing medical exams, treating acute injuries and illnesses per protocols, and supporting workplace wellness initiatives. UC Merced Occupational Health Clinic provides treatment for work-related injuries and illnesses; preventive medical services; OSHA and departmentally mandated medical surveillance programs; onboarding of new employees; and supportive efforts designed to improve the general well-being of UCM employees. Occupational Health collaborates with Environment, Health & Safety and Human Resources to create a safe work environment and to support employee healthcare. This role leads in training and program development among nursing staff and interacts with HR and campus stakeholders. Key Responsibilities
Clinical: Evaluate and treat acute or serious injuries, illnesses or exposures per protocols; determine care approach (refer to hospital/physician/return to work); collaborate with the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Health & Wellbeing as needed. Conduct medical surveillance exams (histories, physicals, blood tests, audiograms, pulmonary function tests) to support worksite health and safety programs. Identify health problems and hazards through work-site surveys, toxicological research, and analysis of OSHA logs and accident reports; consult with EHS to improve practices and eliminate hazards. Coordinate with the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Health & Wellbeing, Occupational Health & Wellness Coordinator, and HR staff to monitor services for injured workers to ensure effective recovery and return to work. Protect personal health information as required by law; prepare accurate written reports and enter them into the Occupational Health Record system in a timely manner. Administrative/Programmatic: Lead or assist in developing, administering, and documenting health programs (injury prevention, treatment, medical surveillance, health promotion, disease management, case management); participate in reviews of clinical care and program effectiveness; advise on program improvements. Explain and address questions about occupational health and wellness programs to employees and managers; analyze, document, and present program data to stakeholders; serve as a spokesperson for specialized projects or programs. Coordinate with Human Resources, EH&S, and other specialists (industrial hygiene, safety, radiation assessment) and external agencies (local public health, community providers); provide essential support during emergencies to protect health, safety, and Lab operations. Identify and implement improvements in assigned program areas. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited institution; and/or advanced degree (master’s degree or higher) in a Nurse Practitioner program (ACEN or CCNE accredited preferred). 5 years of clinical experience, with a minimum of 2 years in the occupational health setting (required). Active, unrestricted California RN license; Active California NP license; DEA registration to prescribe Schedule II-V medications (required). Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) or COHNS required; BLS required; certification or ability to gain certification in spirometry, audiometry, CPR, and other relevant certifications as determined (required). Experience in a university or academic health care setting preferred. Strong clinical judgment, collaboration and administrative capabilities; knowledge of professional nursing principles; excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of workers’ compensation laws and applicable state and federal privacy/confidentiality regulations; proficiency with EMR systems and occupational health data management. Ability to analyze needs, establish priorities, multitask, and prioritize in a dynamic environment; ability to explain programs to diverse audiences. Additional Information
