The Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) / Modelo Academico para Proveer Acceso a la Salud (MAPAS) is a global network of academic health centers collaborating with ministries of health in low and middle-income countries to ensure essential health care for all. AMPATH's partnership model supports public-sector health care delivery systems to improve population health and foster long-term, equitable partnerships with AHCs and universities. The division works to leverage service, education, and research to improve health outcomes and promote health equity for vulnerable populations globally. Dell Medical School collaborates with BUAP in Mexico to adapt the AMPATH/MAPAS Model in Puebla, Mexico. The AMPATH/MAPAS Mexico partnership aims to strengthen health care services, human capacity, and health equity in Puebla, Texas, and globally. About the Clinical Team Leader, AMPATH/MAPAS Mexico Opportunity

The Department of Population Health, Division of Global Health seeks a Clinical Team Leader for the AMPATH/MAPAS Mexico program in Puebla, Mexico. The Clinical Team Leader will split time between Austin, TX and Puebla, Mexico. This is a faculty position at the rank of Instructor, Dell Medical School, UT Austin. The Clinical Team Leader will collaborate with the Chief of the Division of Global Health, the AMPATH/MAPAS Mexico Partnership Director and Clinical Lead, BUAP leadership, and Mexican public sector partners to advance the non-communicable disease (NCD) program, contribute to AMPATH's mission of care, education, and research, and mentor learners from UT Austin and BUAP. Key responsibilities include leadership, cultural and linguistic engagement with Mexican partners, development of a group-based NCD care model, training and mentoring promotoras (CHWs), and monitoring and evaluation of the NCD program. The role also involves teaching and mentorship for UT Austin and BUAP learners and learners in Puebla. The position offers professional mentorship to support career growth. Central Health – Clinical Roles The Austin clinical role will be with Central Health, the safety-net hospital district serving the Austin/Travis County area. Clinical opportunities will be determined with the candidate and Central Health based on mutual interest and need, and may include: Department of High-Risk Populations : Provide compassionate, trauma-informed care to people experiencing homelessness or who are marginalized or disconnected from care; work with a multidisciplinary team to expand access to care. Bridge/Mobile/Street services: high-access, low-barrier care at hubs and mobile sites, aiming to connect patients to primary care and long-term medical homes. Respite: care for patients discharged from hospital who require medical stabilization and assisted transition to housing, with focus on preventing readmissions and homelessness. Housing for Health: integrated medical and behavioral health care for individuals transitioning to housing. Transitions of Care : The staff physician will oversee patient care, manage clinical teams, and provide direct care in post-acute settings (e.g., SNFs, hospitals, home visits). Responsibilities include acting as an attending physician, leading rounds, coordinating with care teams, and supporting transitions of care and navigation services. Activities include: Collaborate with APPs and case management teams for Transitional Care at Home programs. Provide direct patient care in SNFs and acute hospital settings; serve as an attending physician in SNFs. Essential Functions Develop and maintain relationships with Mexican academic, government, and community partners related to the NCD program. Design clinical protocols for a group-based NCD care model informed by Mexican guidelines and WHO/PAHO resources. Develop training materials for NCD care in Spanish, targeted to early-stage physicians, primary providers, and CHWs. Lead and mentor BUAP and UT/DMS trainees in the group-based NCD care model. Coordinate with AMPATH/MAPAS monitoring and evaluation teams on NCD data collection and analysis. Manage or support external funding for AMPATH/MAPAS Care programs as directed. Contribute to global health division and AMPATH Consortium funding proposals and reports. Develop and implement didactic and clinical education programs for UT Austin, BUAP, and visiting trainees in Puebla, ensuring alignment with institutional standards. Provide leadership and mentorship to faculty and residents in scholarship, teaching, and service related to AMPATH/MAPAS Mexico. Required: Fluency in both English and Spanish (professional and medical Spanish). MD with residency in Internal Medicine, Medicine-Pediatrics, or Family Medicine. An MPH or related graduate degree is preferred. Eligibility for faculty appointment at Dell Medical School with a rank appropriate to experience. Experience in low-income settings, ideally in Latin America. Strong ability to organize and conduct education and clinical activities in an international setting. Excellent communication skills across in-person and digital platforms. Ability to build relationships across sectors and cultures; collaborate with administration, staff, peers, and faculty. Ability to collect and manage data to track outcomes; strong team-building and conflict resolution skills.
