Overview The Phlebotomist is responsible for the proper collection of all specimen types on patients of all ages and in all states of health using proven techniques and appropriate collection devices to ensure safe and adequate collection.

Center for Discovery and Innovation- CDI was established by Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) as an academic basic and translational research enterprise to rapidly translate science innovation to the clinic and to improve outcomes for patients with cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune disease and other acute and chronic diseases. It has 32 labs, 190 scientists and allied personnel supported by 60 NIH grants and more than 30 other grants and contracts. Areas of expertise include genomics, epigenetics, drug resistance, stem cell biology, drug discovery, diagnostics and biomarker development, and pharmacology.

Responsibilities

Collect intravenous and/or capillary blood from newborn through geriatric aged patients using proper aseptic collection techniques.

Draw blood into proper tubes and culture vials according to the purpose for which the specimen is to be tested.

Perform blood drawing procedures.

Demonstrate high success rate (95%) on first venipuncture, and perform no more than two venipunctures per patient.

Maintain work area with proper level of supplies.

Log refrigerator temperature daily, and inform section head if temperatures fall outside of optimal range.

Keep a log on all patient activity and send daily to Outreach Section Head.

Obtain all necessary information required for a patient test to be performed and billed properly.

Travel and perform phlebotomy duties at off-site locations for corporate and municipal health fairs, and deliver specimens to the laboratory as needed.

Identify the needs of the patient population served and modify and deliver care that is specific to those needs (e.g., age, culture, language, hearing, and/or visually impaired). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).

Adhere to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Qualifications

High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.

Proven phlebotomy skills with patients of all ages.

Computer literacy.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred

American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification registered or eligible.

Compensation Minimum rate of $21.40 Hourly.
