Overview The Research Associate will work in the laboratory of Andrew Nelson conducting preclinical research in infectious disease, cancer, and surgery. The work will involve design, execution, analysis, and reporting of experiments that evaluate the efficacy of new therapeutics. Candidates should have a background in biomedical sciences, experience with PK/PD, surgical techniques, microbiology, data analysis, grant writing, and scientific manuscript preparation.
The Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI) is a translational research enterprise founded by Hackensack Meridian Health in 2019. CDI has grown to 32 labs, 190 scientists, and is supported by 60 NIH grants and numerous other funding sources. Core expertise spans genomics, epigenetics, drug resistance, stem cell biology, drug discovery, diagnostics, biomarker development, and pharmacology.
Responsibilities
Conduct research and laboratory tasks under direct supervision.
Collect, analyze, and interpret data.
Create reports on initial observations and conclusions.
Present findings to senior staff.
Review experimental protocols, design, and documentation.
Handle moderately complex issues, referring more complex problems to senior staff.
Participate in the design and performance of research projects.
Mentor students or research assistants.
Publish results in peer‑reviewed journals.
Perform general laboratory functions, including equipment maintenance and restocking.
Present results in internal and external research forums.
Write manuscripts and grants as appropriate.
Seek funding from NIH or foundations as appropriate.
Other duties and projects as assigned.
Adhere to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
MD or PhD in a relevant science with a minimum of two years as a postdoctoral research fellow, or a master’s degree with a minimum of three years of related research experience.
Minimum publication record of two first‑author articles in high‑quality peer‑reviewed journals.
Experience conducting and designing research projects.
Solid working knowledge of the subject matter.
Demonstrated involvement in research program development and performance improvement.
Lab‑specific technical skills.
Strong organization skills with attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace platforms.
Preferred
Experience working in a BSL‑2/BSL‑3 laboratory facility.
Compensation Minimum annual rate of $63,336.00. The base compensation is determined at the time of the offer and may differ from the posted rate based on experience, education, market data, and budget considerations. This role includes health, dental, vision, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits.
