Endoscopy / GI Technician (ASC) – Gastroenterology / Endoscopy Suite Overview

Under the direction of the RN, GI physician, or ASC leadership, the Endoscopy / GI Technician provides technical and procedural support in a GI endoscopy suite. The technician sets up, maintains, and decontaminates endoscopic equipment, assists physicians during procedures, helps with patient preparation and recovery, and ensures proper room turnover. This role is non-certified (i.e., the candidate is not required to hold a formal endoscopy certification), but requires competence in sterile technique, handling scopes/equipment, and the ability to assist clinical staff and physicians. Key Responsibilities

Pre-Procedure / Setup: Prepare the procedure rooms before the first case of the day; check and calibrate endoscopic equipment (video processors, light sources, insufflators, suction, monitors, cables); assemble and lay out procedural instrument trays, sterile disposables, and accessories; verify availability of scopes, biopsy forceps, snares, injection needles, polypectomy tools; ensure suction, air/water, insufflation systems, pumps, and monitors are functional; confirm supplies, sterilization indicators, and backup equipment are in place; stock the room with sterile gowns, gloves, drapes, cleaning solutions, and ancillary supplies; assist in patient arrival tasks (escort patients, hook up monitoring equipment, connect basic lines under RN direction); review procedure schedule and anticipated needs of each case. Intra-Procedure Support: Assist the physician and RN during GI endoscopy procedures by passing instruments in a sterile manner, controlling equipment as requested, managing video system and documentation, maintaining a sterile field, observing patient status, and handling biopsy/specimen containers. Post-Procedure / Turnover: Clean, disinfect, and reprocess endoscopic instruments; perform leak tests and maintenance checks; document discrepancies or scope damage; reassemble instruments and restock trays; turnover rooms efficiently and dispose of biowaste per infection control and OSHA rules; maintain reprocessing and maintenance logs. Inventory, Maintenance & Quality Assurance: Monitor inventory, rotate stock, coordinate with vendors for repairs/calibrations, participate in QA audits and instrumentation quality monitoring, assist with documentation of quality indicators and training as directed. Patient Interaction & Safety: Assist with patient positioning and transfer, explain basic procedural steps within scope, monitor environment for safety and sterility, respond to emergencies, ensure safety guidelines are followed. Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate documentation in the patient chart (instruments used, specimen collection, procedural times, scope handling logs), report malfunctions, provide input on outcomes and instrument performance. Other Duties: Participate in continuing education, assist with departmental projects or expansion efforts, cross-train in related roles as needed. Qualifications

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certificate in medical technology, sterile processing, surgical tech, or allied health is a plus. 0–2 years of experience in endoscopy, surgical tech, sterile processing, or gastrointestinal procedures preferred but not mandatory. Basic knowledge of GI anatomy and physiology. Familiarity with endoscopic equipment and sterilization, infection control, and aseptic techniques. Ability to follow SOPs and manufacturer instructions; good manual dexterity and attention to detail; ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication and teamwork skills; basic computer skills and experience with documentation systems and inventory tracking. Physical ability to stand for long periods and move moderate loads; ability to work under procedural stress or emergencies. Willingness to work variable hours/shifts, including early mornings or occasional weekends as needed. Preferred / Optional Qualifications

Formal certification (e.g., Certified Endoscopy Technician, CFER) or similar Prior ASC or GI procedural experience Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Knowledge of advanced GI procedures (ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound) Radiation safety training (if fluoroscopy is used) Experience with quality improvement, instrumentation QA, reprocessing auditing Working Conditions

Clean room / procedure suite environment requiring sterile technique Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, sharps, and chemical disinfectants Use of PPE such as gloves, gowns, masks, and face shields Regular contact with patients, clinicians, and support staff Possibility of responding to equipment issues, emergency cases, or overtime Performance Metrics / Success Criteria
