The Structural Field Engineer (SFE) will provide technical support for WMATA’s structural maintenance. The SFE will set up key processes, assist with implementing those processes, and work with maintenance crews to ensure adherence to specifications, work instructions, methods, procedures, and product data. The role involves supporting maintenance strategies, material and equipment selection, and coordinating with engineering offices and WMATA program teams. Major Duties And Responsibilities
Primarily responsible for providing technical support to structural maintenance crews, including interpreting and ensuring compliance with specifications, work instructions, methods, procedures, and product data. Assist in developing maintenance strategies, determining maintenance frequency and type, and selecting appropriate materials and equipment. Maintain regular logs of SFE technical support work. Develop and maintain understanding of maintenance plans, project specifications, work instructions, schedules, safety regulations, and relevant drawings to stay informed about responsibilities and plans. Provide technical support for structural repairs and restoration projects (e.g., direct fixation track support, grout pads, leak mitigation, drainage system maintenance and repairs, structural concrete patching, and related components). Interface with ENGA’s structural engineers when new or modified repair procedures are needed; develop comprehensive repair procedures as needed. Provide scheduling recommendations based on WMATA’s allowable work windows; monitor and support field activities with technical assistance. Review and analyze conditions, defects and incidents in asset management databases (Maximo® and Optram®) to determine appropriate maintenance activities. Coordinate with maintenance crews and managers; potentially interface with the reliability team to inform maintenance program decisions. Provide recommendations to the Program Director for enhancements to structural asset management strategies and contribute to the Structural Asset Management Plan. Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director. Background And Experience Required
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in construction and preferably maintenance of major transit projects or similar infrastructure. Proven experience with concrete and steel structures. Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and repair procedures, and guide maintenance crews on document interpretation. Ability to proactively assist maintenance crews in selecting and deploying materials and equipment and related construction methods and techniques. Ability to identify and address safety and quality concerns; strong coordination and communication with maintenance staff. Preferred Qualifications
Experience in tunnel maintenance, including leak mitigation. Experience in maintaining track-beds under direct fixation track, including track-bed and drainage system cleaning, and grout pad renewals. Experience with WMATA structural repairs. Experience with asset management databases such as Maximo and Optram, and incident analysis for maintenance strategy and planning. This is a 100% on-site position.
