The Psychiatric Advanced Practice RN is appointed by the Medical Director with approval of the State Hospital Superintendent. The role involves highly advanced (senior-level) psychiatric care under delegated supervision by a psychiatrist. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, and providing comprehensive psychiatric patient care independently or with a team, supervising others, and performing administrative duties. The position may involve telemedicine collaboration with physicians, quality assessment participation, and leadership of the patient recovery team. The role supports disaster response and COOP activation as needed and may require alternate shift patterns. Responsibilities

• Performs advanced psychiatric care under supervision of a physician; assesses, plans, and provides care independently or with others. • Directs psychiatric activities and treatment, monitors trends, and recommends improvements. • Prescribes medications (including antipsychotics), orders and interprets tests, and makes referrals. • Leads recovery team meetings, participates in court hearings, and liaises with courts. • Supervises APRNs and other staff; participates in quality improvement and OPPE activities. • Maintains accurate documentation and ensures compliance with policies and procedures. • May participate in telemedicine with physicians; willing to serve in leadership roles within the recovery team. Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Attends work regularly and supports required shift schedules, overtime as needed. Promotes a therapeutic and safe psychiatric milieu; provides acute and long-term care; conducts routine evaluations. Prescribes medications, orders tests, consults, and makes referrals. Provides direct psychiatric care including initial and ongoing assessments; reviews treatment plans. Leads rounds, recovery team meetings, court involvement, and liaison to courts. Reviews hospitalized patients on-call evaluations; ensures necessary supports are identified. Ensures accurate and timely documentation, including brief summaries and assessments; supports revenue integrity and policy compliance. Performs audits and participates in hospital-wide quality improvement programs and OPPE. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of psychiatric/nursing methods, laws, and hospital operations. Knowledge of evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment procedures in psychiatry. Knowledge of documentation and care plan development. Skills in interpreting laboratory results and using diagnostic tools. Ability to supervise others and work with interdisciplinary teams; communicate clearly in writing and orally. Ability to work independently and adapt to shifting responsibilities. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications

Must be registered and certified as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Texas Board of Nursing or via reciprocity; APRN specialization certified by a recognized certifying body; current DEA registration; and a National Provider Identifier (NPI). Initial Screening Criteria

Master’s degree or higher in an advanced practice nursing program; at least 2 years of clinical nursing experience; 1 year of APRN work preferred; 1 year of supervisory/leadership experience. Additional Information
