role at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This full-time on-site position is located in Los Alamos, NM, within the Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, DARHT Engineering, Operations, and Physics (J-6) Group. What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. J-6 provides state-of-the-art analytical accelerator, pulsed power, beam-target, and radiographic physics capabilities in support of LANL\'s hydrodynamic test mission. Core responsibilities of the group include: (1) designing, modeling, and verifying beam physics in accelerators, (2) advancing beam-target interactions science and technology, (3) designing and verifying relativistic electron diodes, (4) designing and fielding diagnostics including pulsed power and non-invasive beam and plasma diagnostics, (5) system engineering support for controls, mechanical, pulsed power, and diagnostic systems for accelerators, (6) operating, maintaining, and upgrading accelerators, and (7) conducting R&D for optimization and upgrades of the accelerators. As a member of the DARHT R&D Engineering and Design Team, the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 will provide mechanical design and systems engineering support for the DARHT accelerators. Responsibilities by Level
R&D Engineer 2
(salary range: $104,100 - $172,200) Work with multi-disciplinary teams to define and execute DARHT research experiments, facility modifications, and updates. Conduct necessary analysis and modelling to define system requirements and decompose them into subsystem and component level requirements. Define and manage interfaces and necessary documentation (technical data package). Collaborate with modelling and drafting support to detail the design. Interface with procurement, sub-contractors, suppliers, and internal fabrication shops to secure hardware. Define and perform testing to demonstrate requirement compliance. Document and communicate testing results. Contribute to proposal, planning, execution, and publication of DARHT accelerator research and development projects. Apply engineering principles to define maintenance requirements including corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance and track system performance. Define and maintain technical baseline criteria and documents in support of facility configuration management. Use engineering analysis to support DARHT troubleshooting, safety analyses, and hazards evaluations. R&D Engineer 3
(salary range: $125,200 - $211,300) Lead multi-disciplinary teams to define and execute DARHT research experiments, facility modifications, and updates. Conduct analysis and modelling to define system requirements and decompose them into subsystem and component level requirements. Define and manage interfaces and necessary documentation (technical data package). Collaborate with modelling and drafting support to detail the design. Interface with procurement, sub-contractors, suppliers, and internal fabrication shops to secure hardware. Define and perform testing to demonstrate requirement compliance. Document and communicate testing results. Propose, plan, execute, and publish research efforts related to the DARHT facility and its mission. Lead or serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in system requirement reviews, design reviews, and engineering change boards to approve configuration changes to the DARHT facility. Lead DARHT troubleshooting efforts, safety analyses, and hazards evaluations. Lead small project teams, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution. Interface with customers including program managers, experimentalists, and DOE facility site representatives. What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: Demonstrated ability to prepare calculations, apply engineering methods, and use technology-assisted engineering tools to solve problems. Demonstrated ability to produce designs using CAD tools (preferably Creo Parametric). Self-directed work style with planning and prioritization skills. Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams. Knowledge of engineering work planning, budgeting and design coordination, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Ability to coach and mentor early career engineers. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance (usually requires U.S. citizenship). Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3: Demonstrated ability leading design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of mechanical systems; troubleshooting experience preferred. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills for complex mechanical systems. Experience developing project scope, budget, and schedule. Knowledge of engineering change control processes. Experience communicating complex engineering topics to technical and non-technical audiences. Education/Experience: R&D Engineer 2: Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering and 4 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. R&D Engineer 3: Master\'s Degree in Engineering and 6 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures, safety interfaces, design guides, standards, and administrative practices as applied to DOE accelerator facilities. Strong technical/analytical skills with a track record of problem solving and system improvement. Experience with finite element analysis software (preferably ANSYS Mechanical/Maxwell) for structural, thermal, vibration, and magneto-static analysis. Experience using MATLAB/SIMULINK and Python for engineering analysis. Extensive experience in systems engineering, team leadership, project/program management, and project/design engineering.
