Los Alamos National Security LLC
Mechnical Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3)
Los Alamos National Security LLC, Los Alamos, New Mexico, us, 87545
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Engineering, Operations, and Physics (J-6) Group is looking for a Mechanical Engineer (R&D Engineer 2 or 3). This position is full-time, located at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and requires on-site work activities. J-6 provides state-of-the-art analytical accelerator, pulsed power, beam-target, and radiographic physics capabilities in support of LANL's hydrodynamic test mission. Core responsibilities of the group include: (1) designing, modeling, and verifying beam physics in both accelerators, (2) advancing the science and technology of beam-target interactions, (3) designing, modeling, and verifying relativistic electron diodes, (4) designing and fielding diagnostics including: pulsed power and non-invasive beam and plasma diagnostics, (5) system engineering support for the controls, mechanical, and pulsed power and diagnostic systems for both accelerators, (6) operating, maintaining, and upgrading both accelerators, and (7) Research and Development necessary for optimization and upgrades of the accelerators. As a member of the DARHT R&D Engineering and Design Team, the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 will provide mechanical design and systems engineering support for the DARHT accelerators. R&D Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200)
The selected candidate will: Work as part of multi-disciplinary teams to define and execute DARHT research experiments, facility modifications, and updates. Conduct necessary analysis and modelling to define the system requirements and decompose them into subsystem and component level requirements. Define and manage system and sub-system interfaces and necessary documentation (technical data package). Work with modelling and drafting support to detail the design. Interface with procurement, sub-contractors, suppliers, and internal fabrication shops to secure hardware. Define and perform testing required to demonstrate requirement compliance. Document and communicate the results of the testing. Contribute to proposal, planning, execution, and publication of research and development projects relating to the DARHT accelerator and its mission. Use engineering principles and analysis to assist in defining maintenance requirements involving corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance and the tracking and trending of system performance. Define and maintain technical baseline criteria and documents in support of facility configuration management. Utilize system knowledge, engineering principles, and analysis techniques to support DARHT troubleshooting, safety analyses, and hazards evaluations. R&D Engineer 3 ($125,200 - $211,300)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the selected candidate will: Lead multi-disciplinary teams to define and execute DARHT research experiments, facility modifications, and updates. Propose, plan, execute, and publish research efforts on or related to the DARHT facility and its mission. Lead or serve as a subject matter expert (SME) role in system requirement reviews, design reviews, and engineering change board to approve configuration changes to the DARHT facility. Utilize system knowledge, engineering principles, and analysis techniques to lead DARHT troubleshooting efforts, safety analyses, and hazards evaluations. Lead small project teams, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution. Interface with customers including program managers, experimentalists, and DOE facility site representatives.
