Metra’s Engineering Department is staffed with over 800 employees who work tirelessly applying technology and engineering principles in the design, construction, operation, and management of our network of infrastructure, facilities, and equipment so that customers can enjoy a safe, comfortable, economical, and dependable transit experience.
Responsibilities Reporting directly to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Substation Electrician is responsible for the maintenance, testing, inspection, installation, removal, and operation of substation high voltage conversion and distribution equipment, including:
12 kV AC switchgear
4 kV AC light and power switchgear
2.3 kV AC signal switchgear
1500 V DC rectifiers and switchgear
High voltage transformers
Motor‑operated overhead disconnect switches
Vacuum contactors
Computer‑based Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment
Additional duties include paperwork, inventory management, vehicle and tool maintenance, and any related tasks required to support organizational needs.
This is a Union position. Starting pay rates may vary based on entry rates in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Qualified veterans who meet the minimum requirements will receive outreach during the recruitment process in accordance with Federal and State laws, including the Illinois Veterans Preference Act. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview or job offer; the most qualified candidate will be selected.
