Overview

Position Overview: GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU) is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge Energy Store (ES) systems for Formula 1. We're seeking an exceptional ES Electrical Engineer to join our elite team in pushing the boundaries of electric power in motorsport. This role is crucial in our mission to dominate the grid with innovative energy storage and power delivery solutions that will redefine the future of F1 racing. Responsibilities

Design and develop high-performance Energy Store systems, including the integration of advanced DC-DC converters for energy management and power delivery. Define system-level requirements for DC-DC converters, focusing on high efficiency, reliability, and seamless integration with the ES system. Collaborate with simulation engineers to validate electromagnetic and thermal performance of DC-DC converters and their interaction with the Energy Store. Develop control strategies for bi-directional DC-DC converters to optimize power flow between the Energy Store, MGU-K, and Control Unit. Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure compatibility of the DC-DC converter with high-voltage (800V+) systems and Formula 1 powertrain architecture. Analyze telemetry data to assess system performance, identify areas for improvement, and propose design enhancements for energy storage and power conversion systems. Ensure compliance with FIA regulations for energy storage systems and DC-DC converter designs. Support manufacturing and testing teams in validating designs through rigorous bench testing and track simulations. Qualifications

Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field; OR Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of experience in high-performance energy storage or power electronics systems. Advanced knowledge of DC-DC converter design, including bi-directional topologies (e.g., buck/boost converters). Expertise in high-voltage power electronics (800V+), including MOSFETs, IGBTs, or Silicon-Carbide (SiC) devices. Proficiency in circuit design, analysis, and optimization for complex power systems. Strong understanding of battery technologies, energy storage systems, and their interface with DC-DC converters. Familiarity with Formula 1 technical regulations for energy storage and power conversion systems. Desirable Skills

Experience with advanced control algorithms for DC-DC converters, including real-time software implementation on embedded platforms. Familiarity with FPGA programming for real-time control of power electronics systems. Knowledge of battery management systems (BMS) and their interaction with DC-DC converters in high-performance applications. Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing of power electronics systems. Understanding of thermal management strategies for DC-DC converters in extreme environments. Personal Attributes

Passion for pushing the boundaries of electric drivetrain technology in motorsport. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Excellent communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams. Ability to translate complex technical concepts between electrical, chemical, and mechanical domains.
