Biotech/Bacteriology Lab Manager (LAB RSCH SUPV 1) – Turlock, CA. Under the general direction of the faculty discipline head, supervise and manage diagnostic testing, personnel and related activities in the CAHFS Turlock Biotechnology section and the Bacteriology section related to molecular testing. Responsible for molecular diagnostic testing and laboratory technical support, including processing samples for extraction of DNA and RNA from clinical samples, performance of nucleic-acid based detection (real-time PCR, conventional PCR, RT-PCR and amplicon NGS), and maintaining documentation in accordance with standard operating procedures. Supports systemwide Biotechnology efforts under general guidance of the systemwide section head to optimize and help author standard operating procedures for PCR-based assays; manage and participate in development and evaluation of new or improved molecular-based detection and diagnostic tools, including RT-PCR and sequencing of isolates; manage the evaluation of new equipment, reagents and supplies; and manage and participate in validation studies to ensure in-house performance of assays. Supervise staff. Position is located in Turlock, CA and is not eligible for remote work.

Advanced degree in Biology, Animal Science, or closely related fields (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Advanced experience in veterinary infectious diseases, bacteriology, virology, and molecular diagnostics; capable of performing, testing and troubleshooting molecular and bacteriology procedures and operating automated instrumentation in diagnostic environments or accredited facilities. Experience performing complex diagnostic and assay development techniques in a high-throughput testing laboratory. Demonstrated management and supervision experience in a diagnostic or accredited facility, including prioritizing workload, scheduling, recruiting, hiring, training, performance evaluation, mentoring and conflict resolution. Experience with quality control/quality assurance and safety in a laboratory using complex methodologies; maintaining inventory and QC records; developing, evaluating and resolving technical problems related to molecular diagnostic/virology methods and biosafety. Experience propagating and/or preparing viruses, bacteria, toxins, and nucleic acids to meet QC standards. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills for interactions within the University and with external clients. Preferred Qualifications Extensive supervisory management experience in a laboratory with coaching, hiring/terminating staff, and directing work. Extensive experience in PCR development, molecular diagnostic assays, ELISA methods and classical bacteriology. Independent thinking, decision-making and prioritization of workload; effective scheduling of personnel to meet demands. Strong communication, negotiation and teamwork skills. CAHFS provides California\'s livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners, with diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, health management, and disease surveillance. The system includes four laboratories (Davis, Turlock, Tulare, San Bernardino). Funding comes from CDFA contracts and user fees; additional program under CHRB funded by horse wagering monies. Salary: $69,600/yr – $124,200/yr; departmental range: $69,600 – $94,100/year (commensurate with education and experience).
