General Summary MedStar Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our Oncology team at Georgetown University Hospital. The role involves clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under physician/provider or RN supervision. Duties include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, vital sign measurement, assistance with patient exams, telephone and clerical support. The position may float to other sites within the system.

Primary Duties

Assists providers with minor office procedures, patient preparation, examination, and education. Supports the clinical care team, ensuring optimal patient flow; manages variable/unpredictable volume. Provides clerical support and serves as backup for the Patient Services Coordinator or other team members. Screens all patients for preventative care needs, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and fall risk. Conducts surveillance for transitions of care, urgent/emergent care, or follow up tasks such as retrieval of documents associated with referrals/testing.

Conducts motivational interviews that include patient screening and/or coaching, motivation to change, learning care, and community outreach. Identifies potential behavioral health needs of patients using appropriate screening tools and notifies provider of findings. Participates in performance improvement initiatives to improve care quality/safety.

Participates in population management activities, including awareness of populations served and engages the patient in self-management support, goal setting, pre-visit planning, and capturing information that leads to health care improvement. Performs selected testing consistent with the scope of practice, including point of care testing, tuberculosis skin testing, electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, and vision and hearing testing. Removes sutures/staples after the provider has examined the patient and written the appropriate order. Documents these activities in the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).

Provides escort/chaperoning for patients and assists with discharge activities. Fulfills infection prevention and environmental responsibilities, including cleaning of equipment. Updates records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manages supply inventories.

Under supervision, may insert intravenous catheter for physician initiated IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medications; may insert, remove, and monitor urinary catheter for procedures and prepare/administer oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular. May perform phlebotomy.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

6 months experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent. Completed externship program at MedStar Health may substitute for the 6 months experience.

Certified Medical Assistant by the American Association of Medical Assistants, or Registered Medical Assistant through American Medical Technologists within 1 year.

BLS (Basic Life Support).

Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred.

Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.

Experience working with electronic medical records preferred for cardiology offices only.

Hiring range: $19.17 - $33.08 per hour.
