General Summary of Position

Job Summary: MedStar Health is looking for a Medical Assistant to join our team at MedStar Health Urgent Care! The ideal candidate will be a certified Medical Assistant with excellent customer service and patient interaction skills. Our Urgent Cares are open 7 days a week from 8AM to 8PM. The schedule will consist of 3 12-hour shifts with rotating weekends, varying month to month. The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative duties in a MedStar Urgent Care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, vital signs measurement and documentation, assisting providers with exams, and providing telephone and clerical support. This position may require floating to other sites within the system. Assist providers with office procedures, patient preparation, examinations, and education. Support the clinical care team to ensure optimal patient flow and manage patient volume. Review and prepare for scheduled visits, screen patients for preventive care, barriers, safety, and fall risks. Conduct surveillance during care transitions, urgent/emergent care, or follow-up tasks. Conduct motivational interviews, including patient screening and coaching on disease management and community outreach. Identify behavioral health needs and notify providers.

Report problems concerning patients, families, and staff. Participate in performance improvement initiatives. Attend safety and infection control training. Maintain and audit logs, ensure medication supplies are current, check emergency equipment, and keep areas clutter-free. Engage in population management activities, supporting patient self-management, goal setting, pre-visit planning, and health improvement activities.

Perform selected patient/laboratory testing, including Point of Care Testing, TB skin testing, ECGs, pulmonary function tests, vision, and hearing tests. Remove sutures/staples, document activities in EMR, and perform follow-up tests such as pap smears, Pb levels, HIV, mammograms, and STD testing. Collect and process specimens, complete requisitions, and document accordingly.

Provide escort/chaperoning and assist with discharge activities. Fulfill infection prevention and environmental responsibilities. Update records for equipment maintenance and manage drug/medical supply inventories. Provide telephone screening to gather patient information, determine appropriate disposition, and document per protocols.

May insert IV catheters for IV therapy or medication administration, insert/remove/monitor urinary catheters, and prepare/administer oral drugs and injections (intrademal, subcutaneous, intramuscular). May perform phlebotomy. Use EMR to propose medication refills, complete test requisitions, and contact insurance companies for pre-authorizations and referrals.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED.

Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants within 1 year or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists within 1 year.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Experience in an ambulatory care medical office or similar setting.

Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting is strongly preferred.

Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred.

Completion of an externship at MedStar Health may substitute for work experience.

For Cardiology offices: 6 months of ambulatory care experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology/science or related major, or completion of a cardiac technician course.

This position has a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08.
