Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) is the operational core of Stanford University’s physical campus. LBRE constructs and maintains the Stanford campus to support teaching and research across the university. Energy Operations (EO) is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of Stanford’s Central Energy Facility (CEF) and campus distribution systems, including the new Stanford in Redwood City Central Energy Facility. The Energy Operations team manages installation, operation, and maintenance of the electrical distribution infrastructure. A Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system provides real-time information and diagnostics of the campus to monitor power flow and respond to system faults. Job Purpose

Employees in this classification perform journey level and high voltage electrician work involved with the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of electrical substations, electrical distribution systems, and general low voltage utility controls under general supervision. Responsibilities may include interpreting work orders, blueprints, or verbal instructions, scheduling work, prioritizing tasks, diagnosing problems, and ensuring work conforms to shop standards. May assist with ordering materials and coordinating with the Lead and Systems Manager. Core Duties

Work in areas of controlled access such as substations not open to unqualified individuals. Work on high voltage power distribution systems 600 Volts AC and above. Splice and terminate high voltage cables using manufacturer and hand tape methods. Install, test, calibrate and repair all types of revenue meters, instruments, and associated electrical equipment. Troubleshoot, monitor, repair, maintain and calibrate computer-based SCADA systems, transducers, input devices, communication equipment and data transmission equipment. Perform switching and maintenance in substations, switchyards, pad-mounted equipment and underground vaults; may act as Person in Charge of operations as directed. Respond to power outages during off-hours on a callback basis. Troubleshoot and repair faulty equipment; test and repair short-circuits, grounds and troubleshoot high voltage street light circuits. Install new equipment (conduit, wire, cable, pull boxes, transformers) for repairs and alterations in high voltage systems. Coordinate plans and schematic reviews with written reports to the Systems Manager; may oversee contractors to ensure safety regulations are followed. Ensure maintenance and integrity of the high voltage system; follow university/shop procedures for outages; may oversee an apprentice. Adhere to safety rules and perform other duties as assigned. Education & Experience

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program (or equivalent education/experience) for journey level electrician. Must have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with high voltage equipment (600 VAC and above) and experience with low to medium voltage equipment and repairs. 10+ years of relevant experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Mandatory: valid California non-commercial Class C Driver’s License; ability to operate standard and automatic transmission vehicles; CPR and First Aid certification; knowledge of high voltage electrical theory and safety procedures including National Electrical Code and CAL-OSHA Standards; ability to read metering schematic, wiring, and installation diagrams; ability to diagnose and repair electrical equipment; ability to perform new installations of high voltage equipment if permitted; willingness to work overtime and respond to callbacks. Certifications and Licenses

Valid California non-commercial Class C Driver’s License CPR and First Aid certification California State Electrical Certification (preferred) Ability to operate boom lifts, scissor lifts, cranes and forklifts Physical Requirements

Ability to wear and work in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hard hats, respirators and full body suits Stand/walk, lift up to 10 lbs; frequently grasp, lift up to 20 lbs; occasional seated work, crouching, climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching Ability to perform desk-based computer tasks and field work; read schematics and perform maintenance in confined spaces and at heights over ten feet Working Conditions

May work overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays; may be exposed to inclement weather May work with high-voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise, chemicals, asbestos, and other hazards May require work in confined spaces and at elevated surfaces; may operate lifts and other equipment Work Standards
