Hiring Range The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account a wide range of factors including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other needs. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range for this position is $27.93/hr - $33.80/hr. Applies professional UC Academic and Non-Academic HR concepts, policies, and procedures to provide guidance to supervisors and managers on a variety of academic human resources issues of moderate scope and complexity. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Personnel for the School of Social Science, Humanities and Arts, the incumbent coordinates confidential and time-sensitive academic, staff, and student personnel matters, provides guidance on job descriptions, compensation programs, personnel policies, bargaining agreements, and procedures related to academic, staff, and student appointments. Utilizes professional concepts to apply campus policies and resolve administrative and operational issues of moderate to complex scope, requiring analysis of multiple factors. Assists in maintaining personnel records and compliance with records retention. Key Responsibilities

Staff (HR) Personnel: Provide guidance to faculty, supervisors, managers, and staff in developing job descriptions and understanding compensation programs, personnel policies, and procedures for non-academic staff and student appointments, including limited hires. Collect and analyze information and prepare documentation to process personnel actions (hires, extensions, fund changes, damage pay, layoffs, and separations). Work with Academic Personnel and Payroll Services to process actions timely and resolve issues. Notify faculty, supervisors, and managers of impending personnel actions, end dates, and separations. Support SSHA Dean’s staff search committees, create and maintain onboarding templates and communications, and maintain school organizational charts. Serve as a resource on onboarding processes. Create and edit Identity Management (IDM) profiles. Academic and Staff Personnel: Provide guidance, policy expertise, and process leave and accommodation requests (Family Medical Leave, Sabbatical, Active Service Modified Duty). Maintain leave tracking information. Academic Personnel: Under guidance from the Assistant Dean of Personnel, counsel faculty and other academic and staff personnel on work-related problems, work-eligibility (visa) matters such as J-1 processing, and benefits considerations. Process J-1 visa, H-1B visa, and Permanent Residency applications. Academic Personnel: Process appointments/reviews for various non-senate faculty titles. Independent Contractor: Conduct initial review of request packet documents for submission to HR Class/Comp. Academic Personnel: Under general supervision, provide advice on documented faculty or other academic staff compensation programs, policies, and procedures. Provide positive customer service to internal and external customers. Serve as part of the core support team in the school. Act as primary backup for the listed areas in the absence of the Assistant Dean of Personnel. Other: Records retention schedule review, miscellaneous personnel-related functions, and other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in business administration, business management, HR, or related area and/or equivalent experience/training. (Required) One year of directly related, progressively responsible experience in academic HR or a related HR area, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A master's degree is preferred; however, it may not substitute for the required year of experience. (Required) Critical Knowledge And Skills

Basic knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret organization and college policies and procedures governing academic and non-academic HR. Knowledge of university and departmental policies and procedures, and understanding of variances to stated policies. Knowledge of human resources management systems and related software. Knowledge of unit academic culture and educational goals of the disciplines served. Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations to Chairs/unit management. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills. SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification (Preferred). Other Information
