Overview Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Equipment Engineer to contribute to the development and improvement of new automation equipment and assembly lines for our LFP Cell manufacturing operations. The Manufacturing Equipment Engineer in the Production Engineering team will be part of operating, sustaining, and improving some of the most automated manufacturing equipment in the world. The best candidate will have a high aptitude to learn new skill sets in the position. Engineers will start with strengths in a given field (3D/2D Drawing, Mechanical/Electrical, Robotics, PLC Programming, Vision Systems, Python, HMI scripting, etc.) and then learn all other areas from those who work with them. This role requires capability across the board to sustain all parts of the automated equipment.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with cross-functional teams in the development of Process Flows, Control Plan, GR&R, Work Instructions, Process capability, Rework Procedures, Calibration and Qualification of tools, Quality Validation, Risk Assessments (PFMEA) & New Product Introduction
Collaborate with Original Equipment Manufacturers in the commissioning and start of production of new automated manufacturing equipment
Collaborate with EHS in the identification, prevention, and mitigation of safety hazards, proposing and implementing engineering solutions
Sustain 24x7 production operations to meet build plan targets through responding to and resolving breakdowns quickly and efficiently to minimize downtime
Program ladder logic and structured text on multiple controller platforms (Omron, Siemens). Program and train industrial 6-axis robots (Kuka/Fanuc) to perform sequence complex material pick-and-place, dispense, fastening, vision systems, welding, and conveyance applications
Diagnose equipment failures, identify root causes, and improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness. Lead equipment upgrades with a focus on serviceability, reliability, and process capability
Participate in and lead CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Action) meetings and reports
Become an Expert Level Trainer on all machines in the assigned area and provide hands-on support to the maintenance team to troubleshoot and resolve downtime
Take initiative to create, implement and improve Preventive and Predictive Maintenance documents and schedules, under the direction of the Maintenance Planner. Sustain competitive MTTR & MTBF targets for area of ownership
Participate in spare parts analysis and inventory development, cost reduction, and improvement with the Spares Department and communicate needs to vendors
Qualifications
Degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience
Experience with PLC programming, troubleshooting and configuration. Proficiency with Omron or Siemens platforms and related programming languages
Experience commissioning and improving Equipment with a demonstrated track record of OEE improvement, Preventive and Predictive Maintenance activities
Experience with robotics maintenance, troubleshooting, optimization and teaching (FANUC/Kuka)
3+ years in a highly automated, high-volume manufacturing facility; good understanding of CMMS, Safety, Ergonomics, Change Point Management, Spare Parts Management
Strong problem-solving skills and an aptitude for learning systems quickly; familiarity with structured problem-solving methods (DMAIC, Ishikawa, 5 Why, 8D) is a plus
Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with teammates in manufacturing and engineering organizations
Experience with winding systems or industrial roll-to-roll web handling is a plus
