Assistant Public Works Director / Assistant City Engineer
to help lead our dedicated Public Works team.
Under the guidance of the
Director of Public Works/City Engineer , you will play a key role in managing and enhancing essential city services, from engineering and capital improvement projects to environmental and maintenance programs that keep our city running smoothly and sustainably.
What You’ll Do
Support strategic planning, leadership, and daily management of the Public Works Department, including:
Public works administration and engineering services
Capital improvement programs
Road, park, and landscape maintenance
Environmental programs, including construction management and water quality
Lead and supervise the Engineering Division and construction & engineering teams
Oversee contract procurement and administration
Collaborate with internal departments, regional partners, and outside agencies
Provide expert guidance and analysis to the Director of Public Works/City Engineer
Act as a key decision-maker and serve as the Assistant City Engineer
What You Bring
Proven leadership experience in public works, engineering, or municipal services
Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles, capital project delivery, and construction regulations
Ability to manage complex programs and projects across multiple disciplines
Skilled communicator who thrives in collaborative environments
Experience with public procurement, budgeting, and regulatory compliance
A passion for building safe, sustainable, and well-maintained communities
Ideal Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred)
Current Professional Engineer (PE) license in CA
5+ years of progressively responsible experience in public works or civil engineering, including 3+ years in management
