About the Job The Smith lab is looking to hire a highly motivated individual to join our lab as a research technician. This person would assist with and perform experiments in the lab under the supervision of laboratory scientists. For highly motivated individuals, this position carries the potential for independent research projects within the lab, with the potential for presenting work at scientific meetings.

The Smith lab is located within the Optical Imaging and Brain Sciences Medical Discovery Team and is in the Department of Neuroscience. Our research seeks to understand how the neural circuits that underlie perception and behavior are established during early development. We employ a range of microscopy methods to address these questions.

Responsibilities

Perform laboratory research (85 % effort). This includes:

Work closely with principal investigator (lab head) and laboratory scientists to perform imaging experiments and data analysis.

Develop skills to work independently within the lab and support ongoing experiments.

Develop surgical skills to be able to perform procedures and experiments.

Learn to operate microscopes in lab and in core facilities.

Participate in lab meetings to report on data and discuss findings.

Ordering and receiving lab supplies, record keeping (15% effort)

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, or related life-sciences field (by May 2025), OR combination of education and work experience to equal 4 years.

Laboratory experience in relevant areas involving histology, molecular biology, or imaging.

Coursework in neuroscience or related field.

Excellent organization and record keeping skills.

Ability to work with animals.

About the Department The Department of Neuroscience is committed to providing excellence in research, education, and public service. Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $20/hour ($41,600 annually) to $21.63/hour ($45,000 annually); depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment
