Under the direction of a licensed pathologist, prepares and performs gross examination and dissection of anatomic pathology specimens and human postmortem examinations. Responsibilities include: Prepare surgical specimens for pathology gross examination, including macroscopic examination, measuring, weighing, inking margins, dissecting, and sectioning tissues. Obtain relevant clinical information, identify necessary techniques, describe gross anatomic features, dissect surgical specimens, and prepare tissue for histological examination. Obtain related clinical history (scans, x-rays, laboratory data) to direct processing of specimens. Obtain biological specimens for studies (e.g., flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry). Assist the Pathologist with rendering provisional gross anatomic diagnoses from observations during dissection. Perform frozen sectioning and staining for intraoperative consultation. Perform biomedical photography of specimens. Perform postmortem examinations including external examinations, in situ organ inspections, evisceration, dissection, and data recording. Move bodies and handle large surgical specimens as required. Update and maintain laboratory databases; order supplies for grossing and frozen section rooms. Fulfill administrative duties in the grossing room (coordination of specimen types, accessioning, holding times, inventory). Assist in troubleshooting workflow issues and recommend process improvements. Act as a preceptor and assist pathology residents and lab personnel; assist in organizing pathology conferences. Communicate with surgeons, pathologists, residents, and staff regarding orientation, gross findings, and margins. Assist in maintaining surgical pathology policies, protocols, procedures, and quality reports; participate in inspections and surveys for regulatory compliance. Assist in obtaining proper legal authorizations for autopsies and notify authorities for tissue sampling requests. Assist with receiving and processing cytology specimens as needed; perform accessioning of specimens as needed. Minimum Requirements

LICENSE:

Current certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Desirable Qualifications

Additional credit will be given for the following desirable qualification: Internship, shadowing, or work experience as a certified Pathology Assistant in an approved Pathology Department. Physical Class

Physical Class III - Moderate:

The incumbent stands or walks most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Special Information

Evaluation of education based on application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher to be placed on the eligible register. Eligibility Information

Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis. Those with a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register in order of their score group for 12 months. No person may compete more than once every 12 months. Special Information
