OPEN COMPETITIVE JOB OPPORTUNITY for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.

DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians in collaboration with UCLA, USC, and CDU, and operate EMS and the County’s 911 system, along with Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry.

Definition Inspects, maintains and repairs various control, indicating and recording instruments used in the monitoring and operation of high and low pressure heating plants and refrigeration plants; operates and maintains heating and refrigeration plants as a Stationary Engineer.
Operates, maintains, repairs, and inspects motors, turbines and steam-driven equipment, steam reducing stations, expansion tanks, air compressors, pumps, valves, and related systems. Tests and treats water, maintains building controls, and ensures proper operating conditions of control systems and life safety systems.
Responsibilities (illustrative)
Operate, maintain, repair and inspect boilers, heating and refrigeration plants, and related equipment.
Test and treat boiler and tower waters, adjust chemical dosing as needed.
Inspect, operate and calibrate building control systems including fire alarm and life safety systems.
Drive to work sites to transport tools and materials as required.
Use electronic, manual, and computer-based control systems to manage equipment operation and preventative maintenance.
Operate gas- and oil-fired high-pressure boilers and perform continuous emissions monitoring calibrations.
Troubleshoot control system components and replace defective parts; maintain operation logs and fuel records.
Operate meters, gauges, and recording devices to verify conditions and ensure regulatory compliance.
Work with outside contractors and verify satisfactory completion of work; request quotes and generate purchase orders as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
One (1) year of experience in the maintenance and operation of high pressure heating and refrigeration plants at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Stationary Engineer II, or equivalent.
One (1) year of experience in repair and maintenance of industrial control instruments; or fifteen (15) semester units (or 22.5 quarter units) in electronics or related technology from an accredited institution, with at least nine semester units in electronics.
Desirable Qualifications
Credit will be given for experience in excess of the minimum requirements at the Stationary Engineer II level.
License A valid California Class C Driver License is required. An Unlimited Steam Engineer's License issued by the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Building and Safety is also required. EPA Universal Certification (Section 608) is required for compliance with Federal license requirements.
Physical Class PHYSICAL CLASS III - MODERATE: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Special Requirement Information Experience at the Stationary Engineer II level includes responsible shifts for operation and maintenance of a combined high-pressure heating and central refrigeration plant, or similar responsibilities in a large facility or multi-hospital center. Documentation of required degrees/certifications must be provided at filing or within 7 calendar days from filing by emailing esanchez3@dhs.lacounty.gov with your name, exam name, and exam number.
Exam Content and Eligibility EXAM CONTENT: Evaluation of experience based on application information, weighted 100% with additional points for extra experience beyond minimum requirements. A passing score of 70% or above is required to be placed on the eligible register.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: Applications processed on an as-received basis. Names of candidates with passing scores will be added to the eligible register for 12 months. No candidate may compete more than once every 12 months.
Special Information Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
Vacancy Information The resulting eligible register will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.
