Construction Inspector (CDOT/IDOT)

Our client is a growing engineering firm supporting public-sector infrastructure across the Chicago area, including roadway, water, and sewer projects. Job Summary
The Construction Inspector provides on-site observation and documentation for municipal infrastructure projects—ensuring work complies with approved plans, specifications, and agency requirements (CDOT/IDOT). Primary focus will be on water main and underground utility work within the City of Chicago, with additional assignments on roadway and sewer projects. This role partners closely with contractors, project managers, agency representatives, and the public to keep projects safe, compliant, and on schedule. Responsibilities
Observe construction, repairs, testing, and restoration; verify compliance with plans/specs/standards.
Work with contractors to ensure adherence to contract documents and safety practices.
Maintain daily records in agency-approved formats (contractor progress, field quantities).
Review contractor pay applications with supporting documentation.
Read/interpret drawings, specifications, and permits; track changes and site conditions.
Coordinate excavation permits with City agencies.
Interface professionally with residents/businesses affected by construction.
Identify and help resolve on-site issues; support the PM with change orders.
Coordinate with field personnel and inspectors on multi-contract, multi-utility corridors.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's or higher a plus).
3–5+ years in construction inspection or field construction; underground utilities (water/sewer) experience preferred.
CDOT/IDOT inspection certifications and IDOT Documentation class (required or ability to obtain).
OSHA 10-hour safety course (required or ability to obtain).
Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook; strong written/oral communication.
Own transportation and a valid driver's license; ability to travel between jobsites within Chicago.
Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions.
