The Position Surgical Technician — Westfield Location, under new management. We are a multi-location, multi-doctor practice that offers opportunities to grow in this field. The position is full-time or part-time and requires an energetic, enthusiastic, and quick-learning individual to join our fast-growing team.
Reports To Surgery Supervisor
Summary Surgical technicians will work with the entire surgical team as directed by the assistant practice manager to aid in the completion of the daily duties of the surgical department from induction through anesthesia monitoring, recovery, and patient discharge from hospital. Strong surgical experience is required. Experience in dentistry is strongly preferred. Duties will include but may not be limited to:
Admit patients into the hospital for surgical and out-patient procedures in accordance with hospital policies and procedures
Physical assessment of patients and monitoring all vitals
Prepare anesthesia protocols for each patient under the direction of the veterinarian and calculating all drugs
Administer injectable medications (subcutaneously, intramuscularly and intravenously)
Placement and maintenance of IV catheters, knowledge of fluid therapy requirements/calculations and use of fluid pumps
Knowledge of use for surgical monitoring equipment (including ECG, capnography, pulse oximetry, oscillometric and Doppler blood pressure monitoring)
Endotracheal intubation/extubation and how to safely administer inhalant anesthesia
Ability to proficiently and closely monitor patient vitals through all stages of the procedure from pre-op to post-op, efficiently assess patient’s anesthetic depth, recognize potential complications and alert doctor to all changes
Recover patients from anesthesia and the ability to assess patient pain and work in conjunction with the veterinarian to provide appropriate pain management
Proper documentation in all medical records and accurately log Controlled Drugs per DEA Requirements
Discharge patients under the veterinarian’s orders ensuring the patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state with the ability to explain all medications dispensed and home care instructions to owner in a clear and educational manner
Knowledge of common medications and their side effects including injectable and oral medications
Maintenance of surgical equipment, cleaning and sterilization of surgical packs and instruments
Conduct one’s self in a professional manner under all situations and maintain positive relationships with other employees, MUST be team oriented, MUST be able to communicate and work with team members in order to solve any issues that may arise in order to best serve our patients
