General Description of the Job Class
Coordinate and participate in a variety of technical tasks, tests and determinations involving the utilization of radioactive materials and measurement instrumentation.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Coordinate and participate in a variety of technical procedures including in vivo and in vitro studies; operate radiation detection and measurement instrumentation including stationary imaging devices, scintillation gamma, and apparatus for in vitro counting.
Calibrate and prepare radiopharmaceutical materials for patient administration; formulate radiopharmaceuticals from pre-prepared kits. Calibrate instruments and review calibration data to detect trends indicating malfunction. Calculate data including patient study results and radioactive decay.
Evaluate recorded images for technical quality.
Process computerized image data, including function curves and reconstructed SPECT images.
Provide care for patients of all ages during examinations, including initiating life support measures if necessary.
Maintain inventory of supplies; prepare and maintain records of radiopharmaceutical activities, including receipt, dispensing, and disposal of radioactive materials.
Provide instruction and guidance to radiologic technology students or other imaging techs; assist in training new employees.
Monitor Nuclear Medicine Department for possible contamination using portable survey meters.
Perform EKG preparation and tracing.
Assist in developing and evaluating new procedures and techniques; consult with physicians on nuclear medicine procedures.
Administer thyroid therapy, ensuring proper dosage and patient monitoring under supervision.
Assist in quality assurance related to equipment calibration and maintenance.
Assist in education and training of physicians, interns, residents, and fellows.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education:
Graduate or completion of a program meeting eligibility for registry/certification, or current registry/certification. Experience:
None required beyond education/certification; Level I must obtain ARRT or NMCTB certification within 18 months; Level II requires at least two years' experience; Level III requires at least four years' experience in the specialty. Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
ARRT (N) and/or NMTCB certification within 18 months; BLS certification. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
