Overview Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Advancement, the Associate Director, External Engagement manages activities and functions of volunteer groups at Roger Williams University, including school-based boards, alumni boards, trustee emeriti, Board of Trustees, Advancement Committee, regional chapters, President Circle, and Board of Advisors. The Associate Director, External Engagement works in constant collaboration with the Vice President for Advancement, Assistant Vice President for Advancement, Major Gifts, Chief of Staff, and other University Leadership.

Essential Functions

Communicate with volunteer leaders to plan and execute meetings and events.

Prepare related materials for meetings and events.

Manage the nomination processes, member cultivation, and stewardship.

Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers with respect to general questions, meeting schedules, and all associated communications.

Co‑manage board financial commitments to the institution including working with fundraising staff on engagement, renewals, and deepening the relationship between the donor and the institution.

Ensure that fundraisers are kept up‑to‑date on volunteer engagement.

Analyze prospect data and advance prospective activities.

Prepare detailed reports and present information pertaining to engagement, giving, renewal, and other related topics.

Develop relationships with volunteers to further enhance their engagement with RWU.

In partnership with University Leadership, develop and execute a strategic plan for each of the boards with long‑term engagement strategies and key metrics.

Create and execute strategies that enrich volunteers’ and board members’ experiences with RWU.

In conjunction with the VP/AVP Office and Events team, oversee the development and delivery of agendas, content, and logistics related to joint meetings of the RWU Trustees and its Members.

In collaboration with the VP of Advancement, lead communications, planning, stewardship, and events for the President Circle and Board of Advisors.

Track interactions and communications with volunteers in the Raisers Edge system.

Maintain volunteer membership coding in the database.

Develop metrics to measure volunteer engagement and report progress regularly.

Oversee and/or coordinate with the Advancement team on stewardship and engagement activities related to volunteers.

Work closely with the Events Team to ensure that volunteers have access to, and information about, upcoming events.

Attend occasional night and weekend events and activities that involve volunteers.

Work with the Advancement Team and Communications Department to maximize positive name association with Trustee Emeriti, and Corporation and Chapter members.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.

Three to five years experience in business development, marketing or financial services working with high net worth prospects.

Demonstrated project management experience, data analysis and reporting.

Ability to synthesize, distill, and present both quantitative and qualitative information to colleagues and senior leadership.

Ability to effectively use independent judgement and maintain a high level of discretion.

Excellent interpersonal skills in verbal and written communication to a wide variety of audiences including donors, guests, volunteers, parents, students, senior leadership, faculty and staff to influence productive outcomes.

Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and regularly communicate work status.

Excellent attention to detail.

Ability to problem solve creatively and ability to work independently and as a team member; ability to maintain confidentiality.

Available for limited travel and evening work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related discipline.

Experience working in a University setting.
