Alert Venture Foundry
Senior Robotic Systems Engineer
Alert Venture Foundry, North Billerica, Massachusetts, us, 01862
Alert Venture Foundry (AVF) is a robotics-focused startup studio developing transformative technologies and bringing innovative ventures to life. We foster high-performance engineering teams with a blend of startup agility and deep domain knowledge. Our teams operate at the frontier of robotics, AI, and autonomy - creating systems that navigate, interact with, and adapt to complex real-world environments.
Job Overview As a Robotics Systems Engineer at AVF, you will operate at the intersection of hardware and software development, applying broad expertise in real-world robotics to define and qualify solutions to market-driven needs. You will own system-level architecture, orchestrating contributions across mechanical, electrical, and software teams to deliver reliable, scalable robotic systems. You’ll drive technical direction and enable confident, timely decision making through targeted research, design of experiments, and structured cross-team collaboration. Your responsibilities will span the full product lifecycle—from concept development and prototyping through system integration, validation, and deployment in real-world environments.
What you’ll do
Establish design system requirements and specifications, ensuring team alignment.
Conceptualize solutions to complex problems alongside mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams.
Coordinate the efforts of multidisciplinary teams, (mechanical, electrical, software, controls) managing dependencies, and clearing roadblocks.
Identify and mitigate technical risks through structured analysis, simulation, and verification planning.
Take responsibility for meeting functional requirements through iterative development and refinement of motion planning, perception, localization and control algorithms.
Ensure compliance with both traditional and function safety and regulatory standards for robotics applications.
Select and characterize sensing to enable robotic intelligence, motion, and navigation.
Develop technical documentation and participate in design reviews.
What we’re looking for
5+ years in Systems Engineering, or a related engineering field
Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering efforts from prototyping to production, particularly within robotics, industrial automation, drones, etc.
Proven competency for systematic problem solving, identifying root causes, and validating corrective actions
Established foundation in robotics system integration, including sensors, vision systems, actuators, and embedded systems.
Proficiency with Python, C++, or another high-level programming language
Knowledge of control theory, kinematics, dynamics, and real-time systems
Excellent technical communication and documentation skills
Confidence with experiment design and statistical results analysis
Familiarity with Agile development practices
BS or MS in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field
Preferred Skills and Experience
Experience conducting hazard analysis and risk assessment activities for functional safety of machinery
Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) and related frameworks
Knowledge of localization and mapping systems and the challenges associated with real world deployment
Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, high-reliability systems, or fielded robotic platforms
Why AVF
Work on novel robotic architectures and control problems with real-world impact.
Collaborate with a senior team of entrepreneurs and engineers at the cutting edge of robotics innovation.
Contribute from first prototype through to launch, shaping the foundation of new ventures.
Operate in an agile, venture studio environment where you can influence both technology and strategy.
AVF is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who are excited to invent the future of robotics.
