Alert Venture Foundry
Controls & Autonomy Engineer
Alert Venture Foundry, North Billerica, Massachusetts, us, 01862
Overview
Alert Venture Foundry (AVF) is a robotics-focused startup studio developing transformative technologies and building ventures to bring them to life. Our teams operate at the frontier of robotics, AI, and autonomy - creating systems that navigate, interact with, and adapt to complex real-world environments. What you’ll do
Design and implement real-time control systems for dynamic robotic platforms, including aerial, mobile, and hybrid systems. Develop trajectory generation, path planning, and feedback control algorithms for safe, stable, and precise operation. Build and optimize localization and mapping pipelines (e.g., SLAM, VIO) using multi-sensor data (cameras, IMUs, LIDAR, etc.). Fuse data from multiple sensors to generate robust estimates of system state and environmental structure. Simulate, test, and validate control and autonomy algorithms in physics-based environments (Isaac Sim, Gazebo, etc.). Integrate your work into larger robotics systems via messaging protocols such as MAVLink and ROS2. Collaborate closely with hardware, perception, and systems teams to ensure cohesive software behavior and real-world performance. Contribute to the design and prototyping of experimental robotic platforms, helping test and iterate on novel concepts. What we’re looking for
5+ years of experience developing control systems and autonomy software for robotic systems, drones, or autonomous vehicles. Strong understanding of dynamics, control theory, and state estimation for underactuated and high-DOF systems. Proven experience with trajectory planning, feedback control, and real-time implementation on physical platforms. Proficiency in C++ and Python, especially within robotics frameworks like ROS2. Experience with multi-sensor SLAM, visual odometry, or similar spatial perception pipelines. Familiarity with simulation tools (Isaac Sim, Gazebo, Unity, or custom physics engines). Bachelor’s or Master’s in Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Preferred, but not required
Hands-on experience with aerial robotics (quadrotors, drones, tethered systems). Familiarity with GPU-accelerated perception or onboard compute constraints. Knowledge of control and planning under uncertainty or dynamic environments. Experience with real-world deployment of SLAM or VIO systems in unstructured or GPS-denied spaces. Why AVF
Work on novel robotic architectures and control problems with real-world impact. Collaborate with a senior team of entrepreneurs and engineers at the cutting edge of robotics innovation. Contribute from first prototype through to launch — shaping the foundation of new ventures. Operate in an agile, venture studio environment where you can influence both technology and strategy. AVF is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who are excited to invent the future of robotics. Seniority level
Mid-Senior level Employment type
Full-time Job function
Engineering and Information Technology AVF is hiring for a Controls & Autonomy Engineer to lead the development of high-performance motion control, trajectory planning, and localization systems. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in the intersection of complex dynamics, real-time control, and sensor-driven autonomy. Note: This description focuses on the AVF role and does not include external postings or unrelated listings. EEO statement : AVF is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who are excited to invent the future of robotics.
