Description of Task to be Performed: AnaVation is seeking an experienced Modeling Data Engineer – Ontologist to join an exciting work program. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the design, development, and evolution of formal ontologies to represent complex domains, entities, relationships, and concepts. This includes adapting proprietary data formats to capture real-world entities in realistic, transportable, and explanatory data models. Additional responsibilities include developing modifications to the data model to support evolving system and information requirements, ensuring these models support current and future enterprise applications by capturing and communicating data model changes at regular intervals in line with the software development lifecycle. The candidate will interface directly with data architects, software developers, and cross-functional teams to understand their data needs, providing expert guidance on semantic technologies and knowledge representation to ensure the data model captures relevant use cases. This position is currently hybrid (mostly remote, with up to two days per week on-site in Lorton, VA). Remote status may change at the customer's discretion but is expected to continue. The role requires an active Top-Secret clearance and the ability to obtain SCI access with a CI polygraph. Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field Experience as an ontologist within a federal law enforcement or Intelligence Community environment Experience creating and managing data models, ETL development, and data warehousing Proficiency in Python, C#, and JavaScript Familiarity with search query languages (SQL, No-SQL) Knowledge of data storage formats (JSON, XML, CSV) Understanding of the software development cycle Experience building unit tests Ability to work independently and collaboratively Preferred Qualifications: Background in digital forensics Experience normalizing data across organizational and operational concerns Handling complex, conflicting customer requirements Knowledge of data governance and data quality frameworks Benefits: Cost-shared medical insurance for employees and dependents Company-paid dental, vision, and disability insurance 401k with matching and immediate vesting Competitive pay, generous leave, tuition reimbursement, life and AD&D insurance About AnaVation: AnaVation leads in solving complex technical challenges for the U.S. Federal Intelligence Community, providing innovative research and advanced systems engineering from Chantilly, VA.
