Job Overview Control Engineers are responsible for designing, developing, installing, and maintaining equipment used to monitor and control systems, machinery, and processes. They work across various applications including industrial controls, cybersecurity, building automation, water/wastewater, power controls and protection, energy management, and transportation systems. They are technical experts in advanced process control, instrumentation, distributed control systems, PLCs, and SCADA systems, utilizing these skills to craft solutions for complex customer needs. Design / Engineering Originates design documents for small projects and supports large programs. Develops narrative design documents, requirements analysis, subsystem designs (CAD, panels, layouts, wiring, SCADA screens, hardware, communications). Prepares specifications, performs QA/QC, reviews designs, and develops plans and procedures for factory testing. Programming Leads programming and configuration efforts for automation and SCADA applications. Programs, configures, and troubleshoots PLCs, RTUs, and HMI systems. Testing / Troubleshooting / Deployment / Commissioning Authors testing and commissioning procedures, prepares test reports, and develops test fixtures and simulation devices. Performs factory and field testing, and commissions deployed systems. Maintenance Performs troubleshooting on service calls, hardware/software upgrades, and replacements on existing systems. Responsibilities Managerial Responsibilities Conducts surveys, inspections, and site tours; prepares cost estimates for small projects; assists in bid preparations and evaluations. Manages personnel, assigns tasks, and coordinates with technical staff. Field Experience Reads electrical/control schematics, participates in system startup, configuration, calibration, testing, and troubleshooting. Tools / Software Experience with computer networks, CAD/CAE software (AutoCAD, EPLAN), and standard office software. Qualifications Proficient in ladder logic and structured text programming languages. Strong troubleshooting skills; experience with PLCs or DDCs from platforms such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider Electric, Tridium, ABB, Omron, KMC, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Distech, Schweitzer, GE. Experience designing, programming, and troubleshooting SCADA solutions from platforms like Wonderware, Ignition, GE Digital, Siemens WinCC, Rockwell FactoryTalk, Schneider Citect, among others. Preferred certifications include DBIA, CSSA, CAP, and platform-specific certifications. Educational requirements: Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in electrical/automation engineering with relevant experience. Abilities Ability to work with extended screen time, sit for long periods, and manipulate objects with fingers. Effective communication, reading and understanding technical information, and attending customer meetings.
