Job Overview Control Engineers are responsible for designing, developing, installing, and maintaining equipment used to monitor and control systems, machinery, and processes. They work in various applications including industrial controls, cybersecurity, building automation, water/wastewater, power controls and protection, energy management, and transportation systems. They are technical experts in areas such as advanced process control, instrumentation, distributed control systems, PLCs, and SCADA systems, using these skills to design and implement solutions for complex needs. Design / Engineering Originates design documents for small projects and supports large programs. Creates narrative design documents, requirements analysis, subsystem designs (CAD, panels, layouts, wiring, SCADA screens, hardware, communications), prepares specifications, and performs QA/QC and technical reviews. Develops plans and procedures for integrated systems factory testing and resolves internal/external comments. Programming Leads programming and configuration efforts for automation and SCADA applications. Programs, configures, and troubleshoots PLCs, RTUs, and HMI systems. Testing / Troubleshooting / Deployment / Commissioning Authors testing and commissioning procedures, prepares test reports, and develops test fixtures and simulation devices. Performs factory and field testing, system commissioning, and troubleshooting. Maintenance Performs troubleshooting on service calls, hardware/software upgrades, and replacements on existing systems. Managerial Responsibilities Prepares cost estimates, assists in bid and proposal preparations, evaluates change orders, and conducts client site surveys. Manages personnel, assigns tasks, and coordinates with team members. Field Experience Experience in reading electrical/control schematics, system startup, configuration, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and using electrical/machinist tools and industry-specific software. Tools / Software Experience with computer networks, CAD/CAE software (AutoCAD, EPLAN), and standard office software. Requirements Proficiency in programming languages like ladder logic and structured text. Strong troubleshooting skills and experience with PLCs or DDCs from platforms such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider Electric, Tridium, ABB, Omron, KMC, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Desigo/Apogee, Distech, SEL, GE. Experience with SCADA platforms like Wonderware, Ignition, GE iFIX, Siemens WinCC, Rockwell FactoryTalk, Schneider Citect, GE Historian, among others. Preferred Licenses / Certifications Design Build Institute of America (DBIA), Certified SCADA Security Architect (CSSA), Certified Automation Professional (CAP), Engineer in Training (EIT), and certifications in PLC/Automation and SCADA platforms. Education / Experience Master's degree in electrical or automation engineering with 0-2 years experience, or Bachelor's degree with 2-4 years experience. Abilities Extended computer use, sitting, reaching, finger dexterity, listening, speaking, reading, problem-solving, communication, and the ability to attend meetings and possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
