Job Overview
Automotive/Heavy Equipment Technician (Fleet Services) – Orange County Sanitation District (OC San). Under general supervision, perform technical duties and responsibilities in the maintenance, repair, servicing, and troubleshooting of vehicles and heavy equipment. Responsibilities
Maintain and repair automotive and shop equipment including cars, trucks, sewer combo cleaning trucks, hydraulic systems, electric carts, bicycles, and portable equipment. Perform preventive mechanical maintenance by inspecting equipment, adjusting or replacing oil, filters, gear boxes, drive belts, brakes, air systems, exhaust systems, pressure systems, and cab equipment. Execute corrective maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical systems; repair or replace broken parts; overhaul, tune‑up, and perform smog and opacity tests of gasoline and diesel engines. Complete all paperwork related to maintenance, such as work orders and logging daily work assignments. Qualifications
High school diploma or G.E.D. with specialized training or coursework in automotive maintenance or a related field. Three (3) years of work experience applying preventive and corrective mechanical maintenance skills on automotive and heavy equipment. Valid California Class B Driver’s License. Valid California Class A Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements within six (6) months of placement. Valid Class P endorsement within six (6) months of placement. Valid hazardous materials endorsement within six (6) months of placement. Valid manual transmission endorsement within six (6) months of placement. Physical Demands
Mobility to work in a shop environment; sit, stand, walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp; climb and descend into and out of vehicles and equipment. Medium to heavy physical work; lift, push, carry, and pull materials up to 51 pounds. Vision to inspect and operate equipment and determine differences in wiring, fluids, and component condition. Field work requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity to operate and repair tools and equipment. Environmental Elements
Field work with exposure to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather, heights, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, dust, air contaminants, biologic/infectious agents, and exposure to vermin, insects, and parasites. Interaction with upset staff and/or public and private representatives. Other Requirements
May be required to work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary. Standby and Call Back duties may include nights, weekends, and 24‑hour emergency call out with little or no notice. All OC San employees are subject to a probationary period. Employees who have not yet successfully completed their initial probationary period serve at‑will and may be released without cause or recourse.
