Position overview

CDM Smith's Construction Engineering and Inspection team is seeking a candidate to inspect and monitor construction activities at various field site locations in Sarasota, FL. Inspection activities are primarily routine and standardized. The candidate will work under direct supervision from higher level inspectors and engineers. Requires knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in highway construction; geometry and basic mathematics; ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions, and specifications; and strong communication skills. Responsibilities Perform inspections of traffic control, environmental controls, layout, construction methods and materials, and all issues concerning the construction of a project under direct supervision. Determine the acceptability of the day-to-day work performed by the contractor. Review and recommend acceptance or rejection of daily contractor reports, inspect contractor quality control procedures and material testing, and verify conformance with the approved Quality Control Plan. Review material testing procedures and results for conformance to the contract and measure quantities of materials placed. May perform sampling and/or in-place testing of soil, aggregate base, concrete, and asphalt concrete pavement. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Certifications from a State Highway Agency or national entity such as ACI or NICET in earthwork, asphalt, and concrete if required by the client or jurisdiction. Must possess a valid driver's license. 2 years of related experience. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. Driver's license required. Travel: 20% (may vary by duties and project demands). Skills and Abilities Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English. Basic arithmetic; proficiency with Microsoft Office. Ability to adapt to new technologies and learn new applications. Knowledge of highway construction materials, methods, and equipment. Ability to read and understand construction plans, drawings, contract provisions, and specifications.
