OPEN/PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - SIX MONTHS PROBATIONARY PERIOD Under the general supervision of senior management, this classification performs journey-level electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of wiring, control panels, motors, electrical equipment and electrical installations in City buildings and facilities, and on adjacent grounds.

Essential Functions

Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.

Installs, adjusts, troubleshoots, and maintains wiring, lighting fixtures, outlets, and control circuits for HVAC systems.

Installs conduit and pulls wire for lighting and power.

Installs and maintains control panels for electrical installations and associated electrical equipment.

Installs, adjusts, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains computerized building, lighting, and access control systems.

Installs, repairs, and maintains lighting fixtures in City parking lots, and power receptacles in street tree wells and in street medians.

Operates electrical test equipment including megohmmeters, voltmeters, ammeters, recorders, circuit tracers and ohmmeters.

Installs, inspects, cleans and repairs electrical motors, electrical equipment and portable electric tools.

Installs, adjusts, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains generators, transfer switches and Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems.

Estimates requirements and orders materials and equipment necessary for electrical installations.

Drives City trucks to work locations in outlying City buildings and facilities.

May act as lead worker to Building Repairers and may be assigned to assist in other maintenance work as required.

Maintains routine work records and prepares necessary reports.

Operates and works from aerial lifts.

Works effectively from blueprints, schematic diagrams, sketches, and oral and written instructions.

May work in collaboration with other City staff and contractors on public address and inter-communication systems.

Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of this position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.

Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.

Experience Seven years of electrical wiring experience, two years of which must have been at the journey-level. Experience performing journey-level electrical work in a government, university, hospital or other multi-facility environment is highly desirable.

Education/Training High School diploma or equivalent.

License(s)/Certification(s) Valid California Class C driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of

Applicable safety codes, rules, regulations, and procedures.

National and California Electrical Codes.

Methods and techniques of installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment.

Proper wiring practices.

Skill in

Interpreting electrical codes and regulations for their practical application.

Using independent judgment and initiative in daily work activities.

Use of applicable hand and power tools and equipment.

Ability to

Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors.

Coordinate work assignments with City departments.

Deal calmly, politely, and effectively with City staff and the general public.

Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period.

Establish smooth working relationships and resolve interpersonal conflicts.

Install, adjust, troubleshoot and maintain wiring, lighting fixtures, outlets, signal systems, public address systems, electric motors, and HVAC equipment.

Install, adjust, troubleshoot, repair and maintain computerized building, lighting and access control systems.

Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and climb ladders and scaffolds.

Maintain physical condition appropriate to carrying out the duties of the position.

Maintain routine work records.

Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.

Operate megohmmeters, voltmeters, ammeters, digital recorders, circuit tracers and ohmmeters.

Operate and work off of aerial lifts.

Prepare clear and accurate reports.

Read blueprints and schematic diagrams.

Read, write, communicate effectively, and comprehend directions in English.

Troubleshoot electrical circuits.

Work independently and/or in a group setting.

Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
