Overview
The Tooling Engineer coordinates new and replacement tool builds involving core dies, fixtures, and auxiliary tooling used in the manufacture of ceramic cores for the investment casting process. Primary responsibilities include tooling management, die and fixture life tracking, and ensuring cost-effective, timely tooling replacement and qualification. The role interfaces with engineers, managers, and personnel at all levels within Howmet and with external tooling suppliers and OEM manufacturers.
Responsibilities
Maintain the Tooling Management Database and coordinate release of new and replacement tool specifications, builds, approvals, and designs through Howmet casting facilities. Issue status reports (including tool history and projected life) and facilitate communication meetings resulting in tooling project management plans.
Initiate tooling project schedules; coordinate and implement the release of engineering changes and/or updates.
Assist engineers and tool designers to contribute ideas that ensure tools function properly with minimal maintenance.
Troubleshoot tooling with engineering and tooling personnel as needed.
Obtain cost estimates for repairs, internally and from outside contractors.
Solicit and review quotes, recommend actions, and initiate tooling-related actions.
Manage tool CAD data.
Conduct cross-functional New Product Introduction (NPI) meetings to define designs and specifications. Review and approve new and replacement tool builds with the team consensus; inspect final tooling builds at tooling suppliers prior to shipment.
Lead continuous improvement efforts on existing tools under Tooling Process Owner oversight.
Work in a safe and efficient manner; maintain a high attendance record.
Travel may be required.
Perform other related duties as necessary.
Qualifications BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
B.S. degree in an applicable engineering discipline
Minimum of 2-3 years experience preferably in tool and die design and/or injection molding
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in managing tooling development programs from start to finish
Experience with die build and repair
Ability to think and work in 3-D space and assess processing needs for dies
Working knowledge of operating injection molding machines and processes
Hands-on ability to work with job-related materials
Problem solving and statistical analysis skills
Physical Demands / Equipment Used Computer, phone, calculator; 50-75% of the day spent in manufacturing areas and lab areas working with technicians and hourly workforce.
Skills & Abilities Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively in a team; Six Sigma (optional); Lean Manufacturing (optional); ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams; strong problem solving and creative thinking; understanding of basic chemistry principles.
