EV AER Development Engineer
Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is the North American headquarters of Hyundai Motor Company’s R&D, serving the North American market needs of the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands. HATCI’s activities include product planning, design, quality, testing/evaluation, new technology development and innovation for vehicle systems. HATCI also operates engineering test & development facilities and proving grounds in California.
Our Team The EV Efficiency Engineering Team (EVE) is one of the engineering teams within the Department of Electrified Propulsion System Development (EPSD). EVE focuses on enhancing vehicle‑level efficiency for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles and localizing them for North American market needs.
The Position This role leads activities for identifying, developing, and integrating more efficient propulsion system technologies in current and next‑generation Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EV products. The position supports investigation of new technologies for off‑cycle, real‑world, and fuel efficiency benefits. The office is located in Superior Township, MI.
What You Will Do Core Responsibilities
Support and establish targets for EV energy efficiency (MPGe) through testing and analysis of current and developing vehicles, benchmarking key competitive vehicles and propulsion system technologies.
Investigate new or advanced propulsion system technologies, strategies, and methods to achieve improved vehicle‑level efficiency for current and future production vehicles while considering system costs, drivability, and performance impacts for our customers.
Analyze competitive data sets and assess future trends in passenger vehicle fuel economy and energy efficiency related technologies.
Lead activities for developing and integrating new or advanced technologies to improve overall vehicle and system efficiencies, attaining targeted vehicle energy efficiency (MPGe) and documenting impacts/trade‑offs to vehicle performance and drivability.
Collaborate and support testing and development activities with other Propulsion System Development teams, Product Planning and Certification and Regulation, or other relevant teams for items related to EV efficiency.
Travel domestically and internationally (up to 10%).
Core Capabilities
Set up and conduct vehicle testing (MCT) for fuel economy, system/component efficiency benchmarking, and analyze test data using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink.
Integrate and develop new, more efficient technologies and execute appropriate test programs for validation of applied technologies’ benefits.
Understand vehicle propulsion systems under various driving conditions and calibrate/control propulsion systems to improve/optimize vehicle energy efficiency.
Simulate vehicle/propulsion system for virtual development activities, and develop/validate vehicle models with test data.
Know propulsion system technology trends in the U.S. market to identify key technologies for vehicle energy efficiency improvement and compliance strategy.
Know current and future regulatory requirements, including testing procedures, and provide relevant information for test and development activities.
Collaborate with experts across the company, including other Propulsion System Development teams, Vehicle Engineering, Product Planning, Regulation & Legal Affairs, to influence vehicle efficiency improvement strategy.
Communicate and negotiate with regulatory agencies for EV Test Procedure.
Create detailed technical reports and present critical information to management and colleagues, documenting technical analysis, system trade‑offs, conclusions, recommendations, and business case for new technologies, as needed.
What You Will Bring to the Role Basic Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering degree from an accredited university.
Demonstrated experience and strong knowledge of electrified powertrain systems, thermal management systems, general vehicle dynamics, and vehicle controls/calibration.
Experience supporting and leading vehicle instrumentation, test equipment, and experimental setup/design.
Experienced in writing detailed technical reports and presenting results and recommendations to engineers and management.
Strong interpersonal and technical problem‑solving skills.
Demonstrated technical leadership, project management, and mentoring of less experienced engineers.
Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record.
Legally authorized to work in the United States; verification of employment eligibility required at hire.

Preferred Qualifications
Master of Science in related Engineering field from an accredited university.
7+ years of total automotive industry experience in one or more of the following areas:
Instrumentation and testing of vehicle powertrain/drivetrain and related systems.
Evaluating mHEV, FHEV, PHEV and BEV performance, emissions, and fuel economy/efficiency test data.
Supporting vehicle simulation and model‑based development.
Experience with SAE J2807 compliance such as tow haul testing and grade launches.
Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as ETAS/INCA.
Experience with model‑based development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink.
Experience with 1‑D physical modeling tools such as AVL‑Cruise, GT‑Suite.
Knowledge and experience in control logic, logic development, and evaluation to support vehicle development projects.
