The Valley View School District Transportation Department is seeking an individual to fill a School Bus Mechanic position for the 2025-2026 school year.
JOB SUMMARY : Under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Transportation; Responsible for assisting in the day to day maintenance operation of the District’s transportation school bus maintenance system.
Essential Functions
Diagnoses and performs all phases of mechanical and electrical work on district vehicles. Processes and completes driver repair requests for resolution of problems reported. Completes and files all required paperwork. Prepares and processes school buses for required State Safety Inspection. Required to drive routes where student transportation is needed and there is a shortage of drivers. Maintains department equipment, tools and facility in accordance with OSHA regulations ensuring a safe and clean environment. Conducts emergency road repairs. Displays safe work standards and high quality levels of service. Works with and around hazardous materials; may be required to participate in emergency clean-up of hazardous waste or material spills. Ensures adequate stock of vehicle parts, department supplies, fluids, etc. When necessary, other specific duties may be assigned that are in line with this job classification
Qualifications
Demonstrate knowledge and experience in all components of heavy duty vehicle maintenance in servicing of diesel engine vehicles and is ASE Certified or has equivalent experience. Ability to read schematics and has experience with body and engine wiring repair. Must have a full complement of tools. Possess computer experience related to maintenance and diagnostic software. Must have knowledge of IDOT regulations. Must successfully pass the mechanic’s exam. Possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to provide effective leadership in performing supervisory functions, as needed. Must be 21 years of age or older and possess or have the ability to attain an Illinois School Bus Driver license and permit. Must serve as a role model for all students and perform their duties to create an environment that is conducive to providing students an enhanced and engaged learning opportunity. A Physical exam and negative T.B. test are required.
PAY SCALE AND BENEFIT DISCLOSURE:
Salary is in accordance with the Maintenance Salary Schedule.

WORKING CONDITIONS : The work year for this position is 251 days. Work is performed in an automotive repair shop environment; subject to noise from equipment, fumes and performing heavy physical labor and outside; with the outside environment including exposure to inclement weather, heat and humidity. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 75 pounds consistently with heavier weight necessary at times. Must frequently stand for long periods, and sometimes work in uncomfortable or cramped positions, duties require physical strength and stamina. Ability to work beneath vehicles and in close quarters performing analysis and repair work. Duties could include emergency call-out after hours, various work schedules including rotational weekend assignments, as needed
