Role on the Team
Position Summary: The incumbent functions independently providing direct and indirect patient care based on the nursing process for the Gynecologic Oncology Service in the H. H. Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Functions as the primary contact for patients and provides education to patients and families related to cancer care, diagnostic procedures, medications/chemotherapy treatment, and other aspects of the plan of care. The nurse incorporates psycho-motor and age-appropriate cognitive skills of the patient/family/significant other utilizing knowledge of assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation. Ensures the continuum of care includes pre-procedure and surgery, therapy and chemotherapy protocols, hospitalization, anticipated discharge needs and follow-up in physician offices. Supports faculty in clinic for every patient care session. May perform scheduling of office visits and procedures. The nurse coordinator is accountable for the quality of nursing practice and provides nursing services as needed while assisting with other activities to help grow the practice and referrals to UCI.
Responsibilities
Provide direct and indirect patient care based on the nursing process for the Gynecologic Oncology Service.
Serve as the primary contact for patients; educate patients and families on cancer care, diagnostic procedures, and treatment plans.
Coordinate continuum of care: pre-procedure/surgery, therapy/chemotherapy protocols, hospitalization, discharge planning, and follow-up.
Support clinic sessions and assist with scheduling of office visits and procedures as needed.
Contribute to quality nursing practice and assist with activities to grow the practice and referrals.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 6 months experience as an RN in an inpatient or outpatient oncology setting OR 1 year of clinical experience with recent completion of the Oncology Nursing Society cancer basics class within the previous year.
Current California RN license.
Current BLS certification.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher for external candidates.
Ability to work effectively with colleagues, physicians, and others as part of a care team.
Strong English reading, writing, and communication skills.
Flexibility to work in a rapidly changing environment and maintain attendance standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in an outpatient clinical setting.
Understanding of Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requirements.
Specialty certification in Oncology Nursing (ONS) or ONS Chemotherapy & Biotherapy certification.
Knowledge of care and treatment for gynecologic oncology patients.
Bilingual abilities to communicate with patients and families.
BSN or MSN in Nursing.
