Safety Engineer The Grainger College of Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-ChampaignThe Office of Facilities and Safety seeks qualified applicants for the role of Safety Engineer. This position manages health and safety programs for The Grainger College of Engineering and provides risk management guidance and technical support to stakeholders. It develops, implements, and manages policies, programs and procedures that promote a safe, responsible and healthful learning and work environment for all Grainger Engineering faculty, staff and students, and promotes campus safety program excellence in an atmosphere of continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

Assist with the implementation and management of safety programs in Engineering Administration and Integrated Safety and Facility Management (ISFM) units.

Participate in safety audits of ISFM units conducted by campus safety organizations and ensure timely closure of corrective actions.

Assist ISFM units with addressing safety issues by coordinating corrective actions, such as industrial hygiene monitoring, selecting control measures, liaising with vendors, reviewing facility and equipment designs, developing SOPs, and providing training.

Provide recommendations on the fit-out of new ISFM spaces, facilities and equipment to ensure compliance with health and safety codes and regulations; identify and communicate facility needs for new or existing equipment/procedures.

Update Building Emergency Action Plans (BEAPs) for ISFM units as required by Campus Emergency Management.

Participate in safety inspections and audits of ISFM research and instructional spaces and prepare follow-up reports with recommended actions.

Implement safety programs in ISFM research and instructional spaces.

Develop, promote, facilitate, and conduct safety training in-person or online using Learning Management Systems for ISFM unit students, faculty and staff.

Facilitate the creation of SOPs, JSAs, and other safety-related documentation for ISFM units’ operations.

Assist with identification and disposal of hazardous materials for ISFM laboratory relocations or close-outs.

Support risk management in registered student organizations’ activities in line with campus policies and procedures.

Inform and advise College units on campus-wide Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs and related activities such as Respiratory Protection, Machine Guarding, Crane and Hoist safety, Hearing Conservation, etc.

Assist with hazard identification and risk assessments in laboratories, machine shops and other College facilities and recommend controls to comply with regulations and campus policies.

Review audit findings and incident reports to communicate KPIs and identify safety program improvements.

Organize workshops, seminars, training sessions, or campaigns to address gaps in safety knowledge.

Assist with the rollout of the College’s chemical inventory program and with operational risk management of College events (e.g., Engineering Open House).

Assist with the College’s Dangerous Goods shipping program.

Contribute to developing a Culture of Safety within Grainger Engineering.

Communicate safety and health issues to promote a safe, responsible, and healthful work environment for faculty, staff and students.

Educate the College audience about Federal and State safety regulations and national consensus safety standards.

Participate on safety committees and contribute to safety policy creation and program implementation.

Help gather information and update content for the College Safety website and safety resources.

Other safety duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.

Two (2) years of professional experience in a safety or compliance related field.

Demonstrated experience providing occupational safety and health services in areas such as construction, manufacturing, wood or metal fabrication, agriculture, public works and/or higher education.

Valid State of Illinois driver’s license at the time of hire or within 6 months, maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with OSHA General and Construction Industry standards across multiple standards.

Experience reading, interpreting and communicating OSHA regulations.

Experience implementing OSHA-compliant programs in large, complex organizations with diverse operations (research, instruction, outreach, emergency response).

Experience with machine guarding, NFPA 70E and arc-flash training, powered industrial trucks, and training development (traditional and online).

Experience in incident investigations and hazard assessments with corrective action recommendations.

Experience in industrial hygiene surveys and data interpretation for proper controls (e.g., ventilation, respiratory protection).

Preferred Certifications

ASP, CSP, CIH, or other recognized occupational safety and health certification.

Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer for General and Construction.

Certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods (DOT/IATA).

OSHA 10- and/or 30-hour training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to work outside typical hours and travel as needed.

Strong oral and written communication; ability to explain technical concepts clearly.

Ability to learn and disseminate detailed information; critical thinking and problem-solving.

Strong work ethic, empathy, and ability to negotiate and interact professionally with diverse constituents.

Knowledge of instructional methods and training techniques; data analysis skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5013 - Safety/Environmental Compliance Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary range is $55,000 - $65,000 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position requires on-campus work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and does not offer sponsorship for work authorization.
