Overview

Electrical Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2) – Protective Systems Team at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Los Alamos, NM.

Responsibilities Design, test, implement, and document critical interlock and protection systems for LANSCE Accelerator Facility.

Maintain and support personnel and equipment protection systems.

Develop, support, and troubleshoot PLCs, analog/digital circuits, FPGA-based systems, and microcontroller/PCB designs.

Perform hardware repairs, upgrades, and on‑site installations in a high‑reliability environment.

Collaborate with cross‑disciplinary teams, support system installations, and operate in controlled radiation areas as required.

Lead design, testing, fabrication, and installation of R&D projects (R&D Engineer 2 level), including scheduling, cost estimates, and status reporting.

Provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and develop technical reports, schematics, and presentation materials.

Qualifications – Minimum Job Requirements Proven experience designing analog and digital electronic circuits.

Skilled in troubleshooting complex systems using oscilloscopes, DVMs, and function generators.

Proficient in reading and interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.

Knowledge of multiple programming languages, including embedded C, Verilog/VHDL, and ladder logic.

Familiar with low‑level FPGA and microcontroller development.

Experienced with CAD/ECAD software such as AutoCAD, Mentor Graphics, or Altium Designer.

Ability to obtain a Q clearance (U.S. citizenship typically required).

Additional Requirements – R&D Engineer 2 Experience providing technical direction to technologists, technicians, and junior engineers.

Experience in writing and reviewing technical documents such as system operating/testing procedures and engineering design changes.

Demonstrated mixed‑signal design work, preferably incorporating bare‑metal FPGAs and/or microcontrollers into custom PCBs.

Education and Experience R&D Engineer 1:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering + 2 years related experience (or equivalent combination).

R&D Engineer 2:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering + 4 years related experience (or equivalent combination).

Desired Qualifications Strong PLC background, including Allen‑Bradley networks, ladder logic, and PanelView configuration.

Experience designing relay‑based interlock systems.

Proficient in PCB layout, sourcing, fabrication, and troubleshooting.

Skilled in translating designs into technical drawings and documentation.

Full lifecycle experience with electronic devices, from requirements and prototyping to installation, testing, and documentation.
