Electrical Engineer 1/2 (R&D Engineer)

role at

Los Alamos National Laboratory . The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT), Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group is seeking an R&D Engineer Level 1 or Level 2 for their 805 MHz HPRF team. The RFE group is responsible for all radio frequency (RF) systems. The group comprises three teams: Low-Level RF (LLRF), High-Power RF (HPRF) at 201 MHz, and High-Power RF at 805 MHz. The LANL LANSCE complex includes injector systems, a LINAC, a proton storage ring, and long beamlines used by multiple programs. Responsibilities

Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot the 805 MHz high-power RF systems, including associated electronics, high-voltage power supplies, and modulators. Provide expert power electronics knowledge to support vacuum tube amplifiers and related equipment. Plan and implement future RF system upgrades (e.g., klystron amplifiers and high-voltage pulsed power systems). Collaborate with LANL physicists and scientists on special projects to ensure RF system reliability and performance. Analyze RF system data to inform design enhancements that improve performance and reliability. Provide on-call support for LANL high-power RF systems (approximately 7 months/year during accelerator operations). Qualifications

Demonstrated undergraduate training in electrical engineering covering microwave engineering, high-voltage and pulsed-power engineering, RF power amplifiers and transmitters, DC and pulsed-power systems, RF components, and RF transport. Ability to read and understand schematics. Experience producing written documents and delivering effective oral communications. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team with engineers, scientists, and technicians. Education/Experience

R&D Engineer 1: Bachelor’s degree in engineering and 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. R&D Engineer 2: Bachelor’s degree in engineering and 4 years of related experience; a master’s degree may be preferred. Responsibilities may include leading projects depending on level. Additional Qualifications for R&D Engineer 2

Experience leading the design, development, testing, and installation of high-power RF vacuum tube-based amplifiers and high-voltage systems. Technical leadership in developing advanced concepts for RF systems and high-voltage systems. Experience applying system engineering processes to define requirements and translate them into designs. Hands-on experience troubleshooting, installing, and testing high-power RF systems within a team setting. Desirable Qualifications

Experience with high-voltage DC and pulsed-power systems. Experience with circuit layout simulation (PSpice, Multisim, LTSPice, etc.). Experience with NI LabVIEW and LabVIEW/FPGA programming. Experience with Matlab/Simulink or similar. Operations experience at an accelerator facility. Essential Job Functions

Physical requirements include speaking and hearing ability, and mobility such as sitting, standing, walking, climbing ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting, lifting and carrying 30+ pounds, using hands and arms, and reaching in various directions. Work Location

Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. Location at management discretion. Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees must serve the necessary continuous period to remain eligible for posted LANL roles. The position commitment for this role is 1 year. Note to Applicants
