NVA General Practice . An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students the opportunity to understand daily operations and gain hands-on clinical experience. Each hospital is unique but shares a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners. Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, assisting or performing surgical procedures, and managing patient medical care. Additionally, externs will practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. Priority is given to students interested in practicing in Alaska after graduation. It is required that veterinary students be in their final year and hold a veterinary student permit before beginning an externship in Alaska. Instructions for obtaining the permit can be found
